Tillman's command issues are scaring me right now. I wonder if it would be worth it for him to log some more AAA innings and let Berken/Hernandez/Albers/Hendrickson have the fifth spot for a couple months.

Even though his ERA is only 3.86 this spring he has really impressed me at all.

What do you guys think?

I say keep him in majors.. keep his confidence up... if he fails then you can send him down.. but confidence is what matters when it comes to pitching...

I agree. Let Hernandez take the fifth, and let Tillman and Arrieta dominate AAA for a month or 2 and bring em up.

Oh and your SIG is HUGE. Check the requirements, I'm sure it will be deleted soon if you don't shrink it.

Both MacPhail and Trembley won't demote him yet - let him pitch 3-4 games and see how he does. No one wants to destroy a rookie's confidence. He will do just fine.

I rather have Hendrickson as a long inning reliever - he has been very successful with that. Hernandez is a good quality pitcher, but needs consistency. I can see him as a 4th or 5th pitcher. Or he can be a good trade bait in the summer... Or he can crack in the rotation next year after Millwood and Guthrie leaves (as a die-hard O's fan, I have no faith in Guthrie - he's better off somewhere else than in Baltimore)...

Very anxious to see Arrieta come up in the summer or September :D

A few of you have said you're worried about his confidence....so wouldn't it make sense to build confidence in AAA, rather than letting him fail in the majors and get sent down?

Of the two I would send Hernandez to AAA. I think Tillman has more upside and could do well working with guys like Millwood on command. I am losing faith in Guthrie, but still think he could be a valuable 4-5 or long guy out of the bullpen. Can't wait for Opening Day! My first one since 2005.

This was my train of thought. At this point, being demoted really isn't a "slap in the face" He hasn't established himself in the bigs yet. I would rather him "lose some confidence" and be demoted, dominate AAA and get it back instead of him REALLY losing his confidence when teams mark him up for 5-6 runs a game.

It's not a question of who has more upside. We can all agree Tillman, by far, has the bigger upside. It's a matter of how the O's handle him.

It just seems Tillman can use some more polish and could use some extra time in AAA.

And yes Guthrie needs to go. What would be awesome is if he won 6-7 games with sub 4 ERA before the AS break and we could trade him for a couple mid-level prospects. A shortstop wouldn't hurt at this point.

Just stating that I would sell if I had a single Tillman card, I think he is a bigtime BUST. Just my opinion.

That it is, and you are one of the VERY FEW that have even though of Tillman this way.

*Update:

Although it has been widely speculated that Chris Tillman would be named the Orioles' fifth starter out of Spring Training, manager Dave Trembley and president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail both said Saturday that no decision has been made.

Orioles on the mound: Hernandez, who is still officially in the mix for Baltimore's fifth-starter spot, retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before loading the bases in the fourth. Hernandez proceeded to strike out the side, and he held the Red Sox scoreless over five innings. He struck out six and allowed four hits and two walks in the 90-pitch outing. Reliever Cla Meredith tossed a scoreless sixth.

I hope BOTH "CREAM OF THE CROP" AL East teams are this shatty when the season starts!!

At this point they have to hand the ball to Hernandez. It's a win-win situation.
