Giving up his starting status to pitch the junk innings of game 3 in the 2004 LCS forever cemented him as one of my favorite players. Time to go, but still sad for hard core fans like me.

Sad to see him go, but it was time.
I do remember I loved playing with him in MLB the show as no one could ever hit him.

A true gentleman who will be missed greatly.

Exactly. I will certainly miss him. One of the more interesting pitchers throughout recent years.

Question is: How many of you all actually remember/know that he was a light-hitting shortstop prospect in the Pirates organization until one of his minor league coaches saw him goofing around with a knuckle-ball during a light time in practice and realized he might have something there?

He is fun to collect. Being a Sox fan adds to the enjoyment since he spent the majority of his career with Boston, but he doesn't have a huge checklist and very very few autographs to chase.

Congrats on your retirement, Tim!

I certainly remember Tim being an infield prospect for the Pirates and his remarkable 8-1 rookie season in 1992. he had an excellent career and played for my 2 favorite teams. Wake will be missed.

Thank you Tim Wakefield. I enjoyed watching you over the years as a Red Sox fan. You never complained about the role that you were given. You just went out an performed. Hopefully the Red Sox can bring you back in some capacity for the team in the coming years.

Sad to see him retire after all of those years as a Red Sox. It will be different without seeing him pitch but like everyone else, I agree his time was up. Class act all the way and played the game like it should be played. You've done well, Tim!

Has he been charged with ruining the Red Sox season yet, now that he has retired?

Remember how painful it was to watch him win his 200th game last season?
It took him eight tries!
But he had an excellent career. Most fans don't realize he's third on the all-time Red Sox wins list with 186.
Think how many great pitchers the Red Sox have had in the past century, and Wakefield is third in wins.
