He is hitting .215 this year. Plain and simple, he is struggling, and at 39 (40 in November), i feel it is time for him to retire. It'd be great to see him play, but his level of play has dropped dramatically due to all of his leg injuries. What do you guys think?

watching the Mariners all season Id say it would never come to that.
the 2008 squad had the worst chemistry of any Ms team. he has brought so much professionalism plus has be a teacher to the younger players so much this year. knowing how a few more of the older guys are going to be gone after the seasons end I think it would be great for him to come back. another thing is plate discipline.. the Ms have been one of the worst teams for walks the past few years, and although Kid isnt a sportscenter player anymore, he puts together quality at bats

I just want to see him get to 3,000 hits and 2,000 RBIs. : (

it could happen. just 2 years ago he hit 30 HRs and was an allstar.

if he has a good knee surgury and loses some weight to take the pressure off he could be good to play at a higher level.

but if his knees keep bugging him its going to be swimming upstream

He has been a clutch .215 hitter.. I have seen him play all year, and when the M's need a key hit for a score, or to advance a player, he knows where to put the ball instead of swinging for the fences like most players

I actually wouldn't mind seeing both he and Sweeney back next year. Those two have been HUGE for this ballclub, both on and off the field. Though I could only see the two coming back if they were both willing to split DH duties, much as they are this year.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ken but this is totally unfair and should not be used to support your case. Griffey was voted in and did not deserve an All-Star appearance that season.

he was not voted in.
it was that stupid rule where 1 player from each team must represent, and the manager chose Ken(from the Reds). Adam Dunn had a bigger season, but Im not sure if it was better at the halfway point.

Sorry guys, but here are Griffey's 1st Half stats in '07:

.286 BA
.390 OBP
.568 SLG
.958 OPS
23 HRs
49 Runs
59 RBI
52 BB vs. 55 K

"Stupid Rule", "Voted In"...whatever. Those are pretty damn good numbers at the mid-way point of a season.

As for Dunn, the two had similar numbers (23 vs. 24 HRs, 56 vs. 59 RBI, 12 vs. 13 2Bs), but Griffey had a better Average and OPS and almost half the number of strikeouts (55 vs. 105).

As far as Griffey retiring, if this is the best he's got, I would say, yeah, it's time to hang 'em up. However, I think if he really re-commits to being in baseball shape and getting those knees taken care of, I can see him hitting .280 with 25 HR's..that's respectable. I'm probably one of the biggest Griffey fans that there is, but based on what I'm seeing, I'm glad the Braves ended up with Garrett Anderson.

This topic is getting old, it's been brought up half a dozen times over the past few months.

thanks for looking that up, so he was a legit allstar then.

but the rule is by any doubt stupid... not in this case, (he had the numbers to get in anyway) but so many times (every year) there will be a worst team that sucks so bad they dont have anyone with good numbers... I think Tampa had this problem in the past... as did other teams.

I can remember times where guys get in with an era in the mid 4s, and someone else was left out in the 2s/low 3s due to the manager having to chose someone from that team.

I was not saying the rule was bad because of Griffey that year, I would have chosen him too.. just saying its bad because it restricts the options, which kills the chance of true allstars playing.

I hate to say it, but Griffey's production went from 'just barely good enough to stick around for 1 more year and try and turn it around' in 2008 to 'could not turn it around and its time to let it go' in 2009. I would not hate it if he gave it one more year to try and get in the .260/25/80 mode, but that was what this year was for. I too think it's time he let it go. Call it a career. An amazing HOF career, and move on...

RIP Griffey mlb career.

He is done and it is time to hang it up. I have watched enough of his ab's (M;s season ticket holder and the seats are be hind the plate) to realize he can't hit a fastball away or a breaking pitch inside anymore. Teams are finally figuring it out and staying away from the middle third of the plate against him. It seems like most of his games this year end up with 4 AB's that go walk, flyout, strikeout, weak infield popup. He really needs to just announce he is done, and let the M's have big sendoff for him at the end of the season. The team would be insane to bring him back if he expected to get more than 150 PA next year. Really, how many guys have a bounceback season when they have turned 40?
