I am a collector and I'm mostly invested in stocks but also invest in certain cards. To any investors reading, have you stopped buying from sites like eBay for the time being or are you continuing to buy and if so, why? Personally, I am continuing to buy from eBay as I've found some real bargains lately but on the flip side, there is always the danger that the value of cards as a whole will plunge in the coming months. Discuss.

I don't buy as investments, so I'm not you're target audience for the question but I think there is some evidence that while the industry as a whole may have slowed, like most industries, big cards still bring big money. I read a shoeless Joe card that was a family find sold for big $$$ recently. A lot of the cards and sets I follow haven't seen a big dip in actual sales dollars.
If the shut down drags on through the summer perhaps there will be a downturn but I wouldn't expect it to be permanent, more of a temporary belt tightening.
I should also note that I'm out of work for the shutdown, but with the extra money in unemployment right now I'm strongly considering finally pulling the trigger on a Ted Williams 1939 play ball rookie, so it isn't stopping me at all, I'm just a bit more methodical in how I spend all the time anyway...usually.

Buying like a madman. Lots of good deals lots of good discounts being offered on stuff. Highly acceptable prices lately.

I don't consider myself an 'investor" . I consider myself a collector with outside interests.

I’m always buying Puckett’s I need for my personal collection. Of course my resources always dictate how much I’m able to buy...

I’ve been lucky enough to stumble on a few great cards recently at very fair and reasonable prices.

I’m still willing to pay big money for the 8 - 2004 Leaf Exhibits cards that I need to complete the run.

Series 1 - (2)
1926 Unblocked Legend (1926U)
1939-46 Best Wishes Right (1939-46BWR)

Series 2 - (6) (8 total)
1921 American League (1921AML)
1939-46 Truly Yours Left (1939-46TYL)
1947-66 Made In USA Sig (1947-66MSIG)
1947-66 Printed By Donruss Playoff Print (1947-66PDPSCR)
1947-66 Printed In USA Sig (1947-66PDPSIG)
1962-63 No Stat Name Left (1962-63NSNL)

I’m also wanting to find a completely unnumbered and unclipped 1995 Leaf Statistical Standout if anyone’s willing to part with one, please let me know.

Now seems to be the time for selling. Prices are literally higher than ever on a lot of things, and I think there will be a pretty good pullback later on things that spiked out of nowhere. I've been going through my collection and pulling out things to sell I think are nice but don't really need. I've also been looking hard at stuff I'd like to keep to see how bad I want it versus my feeling I'd be able to buy it back again later cheaper.

I have been buying Project 2020 stuff to hold and flip. The last 2 weeks have been crazy and may be slowing down a bit but more people are getting into it and more people are trying to catch up on what they missed. It seems like anything with a print run under 2000 and a price under $50, if there still are any, is ripe for a double-up over the next month.

Yeah, its weird that prices seem to be so much higher right now. I figured with so many people out of work we would be seeing the opposite effect. Perhaps its people spending their stimulus checks unwisely lol?

Yep, and extra time at home bored, so they are looking on ebay/facebook/forums/etc.

There's also an article that was just written a week or so ago about how booming the breakers business has been. The main guys say their business is UP 20-30% during the pandemic. It gives people a place to do something sports related, brings them back to when they were younger, and you get the team/players you want without all the extra teams/players you would normally get by opening a box yourself.

It's kind of a perfect storm right now. April is always a bump from tax returns, but this year it's that plus stimulus. And the quarantine boredom angle is likely part of it. While there are tens of millions of people newly unemployed, in large part they were from the jobs that didn't have a ton of disposable income to begin with. Many people with good salaries are able to continue working, from home or their regular workplace. No one I know personally has been affected financially yet, and no one I know has caught it, I'm very glad to say. But there are odd things going on, and rumors/speculation about the crazy price spikes on stable cards. Prominent people with large audiences of people with money like Gary V turn his pronouncements into self-fulfilling prophecies, and similar cards rise along with them. Project 2020 is pulling in crossovers between different fandoms/collectorspheres. And all of it is an echo chamber where rising prices beget attention on social and mainstream media, begetting higher prices.

I have never been an investor in cards, but my hobby spending is the same as last year. The only advantage for me as a buyer is that I've been able to pick up a few toughies that have come out of the woodwork for my sets. Not bargains, but just happy to see them available.

Overall people are spending more time and money online, it has given me a chance to do some spring cleaning.

The Project 2020 surge is surprising. I would have never guessed this level of demand. Topps has released many such sets, OnDemand, TBT, Topps Now. Have the Project 2020 "outperformed" the other offerings?

I have been picking up low serial #d cards of my guy at reasonable prices, even with Best Offers. I have seen what low serial #d cards of past stars are bringing now and I hope the same will happen in the future for me.

Yeah, I'm one of those people who has been spending a lot of time online. I have to watch it so I don't spend too much money because buying on eBay can be addicting especially with sports cards.

I've been picking up all kinds of interesting things on eBay. There is certainly more available and for the stuff I like, no investors touch it, it's only of interest to collectors.

I would say my focus has shifted slightly. I'm still filling holes in my Puckett collection but there just hasn't been much showing up that I need. The delay in diamond kings didn't help since he has been in that set every year. If older stuff gets posted that I don't have I usually make a good run at it.
