1. Mike Schmidt

10.

This one will complete the infield.
I think Schmidt is the concensus answer at #1. After him, though, it gets interesting.
There are only 10 HOF 3B (non-***** League), so the pickings are quite slim.

i dont know about all time. but defensively you got to consider brooks robinson, eric chavez, and scott rolen. each of which has many, many gold gloves. offense there are also many. mike schmidt is a pretty solid number one. this is a geat discussion. i think its going to be preyy interesting who people choose. players like arod and ripken spent more time at short, but had some good years at third, so where do you count them

1. Schmidt
2. Eddie Mathews
3. George Brett
4. Wade Boggs
5. Chipper Jones
6. Frank "Home Run" Baker
7. Ron Santo
8. Jimmy Collins
9. Brooks Robinson
10. Graig Nettles

I think when Chipper retires, so long as he goes out gracefully, he'll finish #2.

No short stop already happened. Kinda turned into a bit of a 'Jeter is so overrated' thread as expected...even though he still belongs on the list.

A-Rod is easily number one on this list. Easily, unless you aren't counting cheaters...but otherwise he runs away with this one because once again, he is the best player in the history of baseball if you don't have a problem with including steroid-users.

I personally don't think Rodriguez can qualify for 3B yet. He has still played more career games at SS. He needs 520 more games at 3B just to draw even. That's four years away.

But here's the thing, even if Rodriguez had played every game of his career at 3B, it would still be a toss-up as to who #1 is between he and Schmidt and having Mathews ahead of Schmidt is just shameful. Schmidt played in the worst hitters era since the Dead Ball. Won 10 Gold Gloves, 3 MVPs and led the Majors in HRs 6 times. Rodriguez also has 3 MVPs, but has played in the best hitters era since the 30s. Rodriguez has yet to win a GG at 3B and probably wouldn't have beaten out Eric Chavez for one if he had been playing 3B all along. I just don't get it.

For those who saw him play, what is with the love affair for Brooks Robinson? I know he was the Ozzie Smith at 3B...I get that. But he really only had one good season at the plate. He had 4 other "good' ones and 5 above average ones. The rest of his career at the plate was bad/terrible. He had 7 full seasons of his career where he wasn't even a league average hitter. There are a lot of guys who get in for their glove, so that is fine. But a lot of folks really think he's one of the top 3B ever. He's 9 on my list, but that is primarily because there just aren't a whole lot of good candidates. Was he so spectacular on Defense that you could ignore his bad hitting?

Naw man, I agree with you completely. The way I see it, if the guy's stats aren't gonna be wiped out by MLB, then they have to be accepted as legitimate. Do you (or anyone else) agree that A-Rod is the best player of all-time? Unbelievable hitter, great defense for most of his career thus far, and some speed to go with it. His final numbers are going to be scary.

Bolded might be my new favorite statement that I've seen on here. Consider yourself thanked.

But yeah I think we did not include him in the shortstop debate earlier this week so he's gotta be on this list instead.

Arod will go down as the greatest player to ever play baseball. His numbers will be incredible --- .306BA 840HR 2200RBI.Many will argue Pujols will be the better player but Pujols will not put up those numbers(except for the BA).

im down with that. there will be some debate over this. some great players have played multiple positions.
and to go with your earlier comment, i also think his numbers are going to be crazy high and he will go down as one of the best to ever play the game. torri hunter was doing an interview on mlb network a couple days ago and said he played with arod when they were 16. said at 16 arod was using a wooden bat and hitting the ball 400 feet with consistency. wow
