I recently posted a list of the top 50 prospects that I made and I wanted to post to hear to see what everyone's thoughts were. Thank you!
My top 50:
1. Stephen Strasberg – Has to be #1 until proven otherwise.
2. Jason Heyward – Look at his stats and his age and you can’t argue he’s a star.
3. Madison Bumgarner – Career ERA below 2.00. Cy Young potential.
4. Jesus Montero – Will battle Teixeira as the future Yankee three hitter soon. No matter where he plays on the field.
5. Neftali Feliz – Showed his blazing fastball to the majors last year with success.
6. Buster Posey – Catchers are always ranked higher
7. Mike Stanton – Animal. What power.
8. Justin Smaok – Pure hitter.
9. Domonic Brown – Again, you can’t argue his success at such a young age.
10. Desmond Jennings – Finally translated his great athleticism into great production.
11. Carlos Santana – Catcher with power. Something every team fantasizes about.
12. Jeremy Hellickson – Throws strikes with good movement.
13. Alcides Escobar – Gold Golver.
14. Pedro Alvarez – I’m not huge on him but I won’t argue with the millions who are.
15. Dustin Ackley – One of the more polished players in the minors.
16. Mike Montgomery – Great fastball and still so young.
17. Jacob Turner – Huge frame that doesn’t have to overthrow.
18. Dee Gordon – Huge potential. May be second coming of Jose Reyes.
19. Tyler Matzek – 6’ 3” 210lbs. lefty who has hit 98mph on the radar gun at 19 years old. Try arguing that.
20. Casey Kelly – Dominated hitters to show that he has frontline starter stuff.
21. Starlin Castro – Same as Alvarez I’m not the biggest. There are some who think he’s an all-star in the waiting.
22. Derek Norris – Another catcher with great power. He’ll be an all-star.
23. Donovan Tate – We’ll see how he fairs after his surgery.
24. Michael Taylor – I’m huge on this guy. He has his juvenile diabetes under control and has the potential to be a 30-40 HR threat with a plus arm.
25. Zach Stewart – Phenomenal year as a starter. Hopefully he won’t get pushed to the bullpen in the pros.
26. Wade Davis – Been waiting for a spot to open up on the big league level for years. Now he has his chance.
27. Chris Carter – Ryan Howard?
28. Martin Perez – Future middle of the rotation for the Rangers.
29. Jarrod Parker – Should come back off TJS with no problems. Electric pitcher.
30. Tim Beckham – If he develops the power he is expected to, he’ll be a rare 30 HR SS.
31. Aaron Crow – Has the potential to be a solid #3 starter.
32. Mike Leake – Very polished college pitcher that should move quickly.
33. Grant Green – Polished college SS that draws Tulo comparisons.
34. Jason Castro – Very solid catcher that seems to be a sure thing to develop into the Astros catcher of the future.
35. Mike Moustakas – Tough year but still looks like he is a pure hitter.
36. J.P. Arencibia – Who doesn’t like power hitting catchers?
37. Christian Friedrich – He’s a lefty with a 159:43 strikeout to walk ration.
38. Casey Crosby – He has #1 starter stuff.
39. Shelby Miller – Has touched upper 90’s with his fastball.
40. Wil Myers – Drafted in the 3rd round but got 1st round money.
41. Kyle Gibson – Huge frame with #1 potential. Coming off an injury we’ll see how he produces next year.
42. Jenrry Mejia – 20 years old with a 96mph fastball.
43. Austin Jackson – Five-tool players that should get an opening day start.
44. Max Stassi – Catcher that fell from the 1st round into the 4th because of his price demand.
45. Aaron Hicks – Phenomenal athlete but I’m more of a production person. He could be next year’s Desmond Jennings.
46. Eric Hosmer – Kansas City still sees him has a middle of the order bat.
47. Hank Conger – Potential to be an all-star catcher but we will see if his production truly comes around next year.
48. Ben Revere – Will be one of the better leadoff hitters in the game.
49. Ryan Westmoreland – Elite athlete that should be a middle of the order bat in Boston.
50. Logan Morrison – I think he’s a bust in the waiting. He just can’t hit lefties.
MY OWN sleepers who I believe will be all-stars:
1. Dellin Betances – Drafted in the 8th round but signed for 1st round money by the Yankees. Just underwent TJS which seemed inevitable with his 6’ 8” frame. In high school he hit 98mph. He’s out all this year but once he comes back expect him to be on the fast track to the middle of the rotation in the Bronx.
2. Adrian Cardenas – If you’ve looked at his stats you’ve seen he can hit a baseball. There are some positions blocked for him on a young talented A’s team but if he can put on 15-20lbs of muscle over the next few years look at him as Chase Utley.
3. Lonnie Chisenhall – Once there is a character issue I usually turn away immediately but Chisenhall is just too good. He was arrested in his freshman year (as one of the top freshman in the nation) and got kicked out of his school. But if you look at his stats now you can’t not think he’ll develop into a 30HR 3rd baseman for the Indians.
Note: I left Matusz and Tillman off the list because I was unsure of their prospect status. I would have thrown them in the top 15.
Please let me know your thoughts!
