I thought about that but maybe that isn't the reason for him not signing. Also, Topps put it in the public that the ball would have all 3 signed. So if Topps gave Mays a gold ball to sign, he would know exactly what it's for. You also don't want to piss off Mays, even if you have an exclusive contract. When the contract expires, there is no way he would work with you again. So in the long run it's not worth it.

Which is worse-- pissing Mays off or pissing off your customers?

Sadly, it's a rhetorical question. Why? Because we will continue to bend over and take all the crap Topps dishes out. The only thing that would make them do things differently is for their bottom line to suffer. And the only way that happens is a large scale embargo by collectors, which will never happen.

I heard Mays was a Jerk, heard a story once about him almost getting in a fight with a guy over ruining a priceless bat 500 HR club bat at a show. guy asked for a discount on the auto & mays refused & was apparently pissed he asked for a discount, so once the guy paid the high price Mays signed his name and purposely acted like the pen slipped and marked right through a lot of the other signatures on the bat. I heard the guy flipped out and tried to go after Mays but security stopped him. If I remember correctly it was like $600 or something the guy got his $$$ back but his bat was ruined and a lot of the guys were no longer alive to replace it.

Can't confirm just a story a vendor at a large show told me.

I would seriously consider breaking an old man's hip if that happened to me. (Not really, but I would be beyond upset.)

Willie Mays is pretty much blind, so unless his handlers have strict orders on what to allow him to sign, he probably wouldn't have much of a clue if the ball was already signed, gold, etc.

I saw your convo on twitterverse last night. Their bumbling responses were entertaining.

It's almost like they are acting like no one would either remember this or hold them to getting it done.

Someday these companies will be held accountable for selling things that they don't have. Eventually the courts should get involved.

We're talking baseball card companies and items worth a relatively trivial amount... none of this is particularly important enough to waste time in court.

Also, since all companies do/have done this for various reasons, there's no reason to expect any one company would follow through on any particular redemption or promotion. The level of expectation across the hobby has already been set and everyone already knows the expectation is low.

Stop making excuses for your favorite company's screw ups. It's pathetic

What I don't understand and in a case like this how in the hell can you substitute a extremely low end product whether it be 1 case or 10 for a very collector specific item that a few people really want for there collection and virtually no substitute is accceptable save maybe autos of other types from the same people?? I mean I have about 30 topps finest mike moustakas redemptions that I am waiting on and if topps so chooses they will just send me some bowman chrome autos of some nobody because they deem it equal value. That may be the case but it is t equal value to me the collector. In my eyes there is no other replacement because that is who I collect.

I couldn't agree with you more here... I have been waiting on an Albert Belle redemption for a year now and it's still "pending"... I only collect Albert Belle, so not sure there is any replacement they can offer me other than the card I am waiting for... especially since I paid a pretty pennie for the damn thing.

I agree that legal action may not be effective but there are other avenues a consumer has to complain about a company not delivering on their promises. First they can complain to the Better Business Bureau, maybe drive Topps rating down until someone looks into it. A better option though is to complain to the MLB. They are the ones who gave the exclusive license to Topps, and it's their product that Topps is representing on their cards. In theory if the MLB feels that a product they endorse is damaging to the consumers or portrays the MLB in a negative light, they they'll step in and address Topps' issues. Of course that would take 1000's of consumers complaining before the MLB would get involved.

I wish MLB knew about this.... having Topps be the only player in the hobby is sh!tty IMO..... why would Topps have to care when they're the only player in town!?

I dont think he called you pathetic, i think he's pointing to your constant harping on why you believe the collecting world should have limited choices as being pathetic.

Despite all the rhetoric, number of manufacturers has nothing to do with this discussion. Ironically more manufacturer choice will most likely only bring more redemptions that will never be redeemed. More redemptions will happen as competing manufacturers try to do one better than their competition.

Redemptions are also what tends to happen when our simple hobby has manufacturers trying to do "too much" for people who complain about not having enough all the time.
