As you can probably imagine, I hate this as well.

100% of the proceeds will be donated to Juvenile Diabetes.

Yes, but its a deviation from the plan. It also makes me think that there are more of this card than topps says there are.

How in the world did you make the leap to the fact that topps is lying about print run?

Because that's what is generally the case when supposed "limited" trade show cards start to leak out ahead of time.
Example?

Normally when people use a generalization, it's because they can't think of a specific case that matches 100%

I know there have been cases of national promos that were thought to be limited weren't limited at all, as recently as last year. I cannot recall a case where a stated print run has been wrong.

and phillyfan, any card / product that comes out before release date is a leak.

Unfortunately, no one cared about National promos until this year.

The conspiracy theorists need to get a grip. It's getting out of hand.

THE CARDS ARE SERIAL-NUMBERED OUT OF 999.

So, there's a #001/999, 002/999, 003/999...all the way through 999/999.

This is basic math. Simple arithmetic.

What a nice gesture by Topps and the show promoter to offer up this card for sale, along with all of the other National perks (VIP, free autographs, early admission, etc.), with 100% of the proceeds going towards diabetes charity.

All the NSC people are doing is taking the #1/999 card that they are "Given" by Topps and selling it. They receive these cards (999 sets to be exact) to give as they see fit during the convention. They have taken the most valuable free card and turned it into charity. On what planet is that a bad thing?

If they really wanna donate to charity, just donate to charity. It's really simple, pull out your checkbook and start writing. It's not that this isn't a worthy cause and that this won't do some small amount of good. It's an indication that the Strasburg might not be all it's cracked up to be. I wouldn't be suprised to see people with stacks of 20 at the show.
