This eliminates almost all of the collecting fun. A set is well worth the price of busting a couple boxes...especially when you don't have to worry about really rare SPs.

I'm sure you know set collectors are different than player collectors and enjoy parts of the hobby.

You also pay money to collect those cards. And it costs less to "collect" a set from eBay than it does to buy 2 hobby boxes at release.
I have no problem with set collectors. I have a few sets myself. I just don't see the reward in paying 2-3 times as much as you may need to.

So?

And?

It does sound like you're harping on Topps.

Anyone who doesn't understand Topps will have a hard time understanding this hobby and/or have been hanging out exclusively with investors for way too long. If you really don't understand, you're deserving of sympathy  .

I'm not harping on Topps Series 1 or 2, but what value is there in them? I haven't bought any Topps 1 or 2 boxes in quite sometime so I may be mistaken but unless you're a low-end set collector is this stuff worth buying? If my post is "off" then please don't take my lack of correct information as trying to knock on your fave product (I am seriously interested in hearing about Topps 1 & 2 , & if either are really a good price-point purchase if you're looking at SV?).

Thanks, Dave. :D
Says the be all, know all of baseball cards. My collection has nothing to with investors, and I couldn't care less about base Topps.

So you don't like the fun of busting packs and you're seemingly on a tight budget. That's fine.

Some people do like busting wax and putting together sets. Topps is arguably the best set to do this with.

You can look through my buckets to see what kind of budget I'm on. But anyway, like I said earlier in the thread.

When I got back into the hobby in early 2008, I made the mistake of opening at least
10 hobby/jumbo boxes of base Topps to feed the wax addiction. Worst money I ever spent.
Less than 20% ROI, and all that money would have been better spent on my collection.

I LOVE busting wax, but if you are a player/team collector, it is THE dumbest way to spend your money in this hobby.

My shop said he's only getting regular Topps boxes this week and jumbos not until next week, he gets his from Southern. Topps Sterling is delayed 'till next week too.

Have to agree with the sentiment that buying wax is the worst way to team/player collect.

However, it can be the best way to get trades for trading with others to player/team collect. Especially if you can find people that actually collect base.

I'll be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that airline shipping is insane, I'd bring my commons to the national and do a 2:1 or 3:1 deal.

I'm waiting to see how Topps does the million card promotion before deciding if I'll buy a box and pick up the remainder to complete the set later or just buy a h/c series 1 set for about 1/3 the price of a box of topps.

To be honest bud, that is not even in the top 10 in my collection. :P
and yet, without its existence, you'd have no collection at all.
Please feel free to elaborate.

Without Topps base cards being released annually since 1952, i highly doubt
we'd be here on this message board discussing cardboard pictures of grown men.

Was at Target as well and was able to nab a few packs. Pulled some ncie little rinky dink inserts. Even pulled a Ripken Turkey red card. Nice base set. I like the looks this year way better than the last few years. Also, those little mini cards they put in are sweet too. Pulled a Pujols and a Reggie Jackson.
