And people are waaayyy overpaying.

That left piece, without a doubt, is a piece of bench or stadium seat -- much like in the 2009 206 set. It's a shame that Topps realized that calling it memorabilia makes it seem like a bat to collectors.

I actually want to get a Ruth green piece, just not with the premium a bat/jersey would command.

Technically, it is Memorabilia. At least they're not SAYING it's a bat.

More and more I get to a point that if people can decifer these things for themselves, then that's their fault.

I didn't even need to know that it said "memorabilia" to realize it wasn't a bat piece.

Thats why I am real hestitant to pick up any Topps stuff unless it states it is a bat instead of a relic. I though this card was sweet and really wanted to snag it on Ebay. It sold just under $400 but if you read the info on the back it says it "Isn't from any specific game, event, or season" and the pieces on the front are called relics. Have to admit that is one sweet card though ;) Kind of sad they feel the need to be dishonest or shall we say elusive about the piece on the card. Being pretty cheap in my opinion.

If everyone who buys jersey/patch/bat or anything else cards thinks everything they get is legit, even though the card says it is legit, they are sadly mistaken.

I dont think topps putting a 2 colored bench piece into a card is going to change anything.

Its not about being dishonest at all -(Topps) sometimes make it generic because its harder for them to obtain a specific jersey piece or bat. Would you want to get a card that says JERSEY but its a bat piece , then you would complain that they are lazy in not putting the proper piece in the proper card.

Are those both seat pieces? I would have thought the right was bat, Obviously the left is a seat or some sort of stadium wood.

Well for one thing I buy all my cards for my collection and don't break packs so I wouldn't have to worry about getting a Bat in place of a Jersey card. I can't remember the last time I opened a pack of cards since it has been so long. Secondly if they did do that then they need to work on their quality control. Thirdly it is not about them getting a specific Jersey or Bat piece, It is about them using Game Used Bats or Jerseys of the players represented on their cards not going into a gray area and calling the item a relic and allowing people to assume thats what the item is, be it a bench from the stadium or part of a bathroom stall in the stadium. I mean if that is what the item is on the card then just say it instead of being elusive about it. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck then it is a duck. Donruss did that with a Earlier Ruth card which was part of a Stadium seat and put it on the card and people paid accordingly for the item. Topps also did that with its Bowman Sterling for a Josh Gibson card and stated it was a stadium seat seen here but the person is trying to sell it as a Game Used item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

If you Enlarge the picture you can read across the front of the card that it is a stadium seat. You and I obviously have a different opinion about what being dishonest is.

I think that is a mystery that only Topps can solve and I'd be willing to bet they are tight lipped about it and we'll never know.

Any idea what the back says? Would love to see a scan but didn't see an auction that had it scanned.

I looked and someone in the Box Breaks section broke a case and got a Ruth, etc ao I asked him on his thread. Waiting to hear back. Will also PM some people on Ebay with them to see what they say.

The key would be finding a single GU Bat of Ruth and a single GU bat of a low tier player from Tribute. See if the lower tier says "Bat", because I've seen single jersey pieces with "Jersey" on it (at least I think I did).

I'll stick with pieces that say Babe Ruth game Used Bat, Jersey, or Pants ;) ;) ;)

Nope, they all say memorabilia. If I were in the market for Ruth, I'd stick to marked pieces.

I was just thinking about this actually. I recently busted some 06 Greats of the Game and they are pretty specific on the back saying, something to the effect of: "The jersey on the front of this card was certified to have been worn in an official MLB game."

To me it seems like if the company (Topps, in this case) was using legit game used pieces, it would be in their best interest to specifically state so. It would only help to sell their product, one would think. Once people start seeing these vague "relic/memorabilia piece" descriptions, it would seem to scare the more savvy consumer away. I know I won't be breaking or buying any of these "memorabilia" cards.

Could we see record lows for Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, etc. since there are sooo many cards of each in this set?

There are 100's of jersey/bat/memorabilia base & parallels for each player.
