The Phorn of Philadelphia

Shortly after the Revolutionary War, residents of Philadelphia were cited as seeing a shadowy figure slowly lumbering down the streets of this colonial capital. With reports varying only in size, this entity was well documented in local lore.

The residents began calling it "The Phorn" as a play on the old English slang word for foreigner - "forn." Being in Philadelphia it was a viewed as a playful usage of the "Ph." For years, the stories of the "The Phorn" grew. Sometimes as a drunken English soldier, others as a slinking politician, the Phorn was perhaps one of the last remnants of the old English empire here in the United States.

Although now mostly forgotten, in 1978, the Philadelphia Phillies considering naming their mascot "The Phorn" to pay tribute to this apparition, but instead chose the Phanatic.
