Today's mail: an original 1953 photo of Don Zimmer before his MLB career began, playing for the St. Paul Saints in a game held April 28, 1953. Photo appeared in the April 29 edition of the Minneapolis Star newspaper. Not sure if the seller knew this was Don Zimmer, as he only listed the photo caption "Zimmer Scores from Second" in the auction title.

The catcher in the photo is Ray Noble, who played in the ***** Leagues, American Association, Pacific Coast League, International (Cuba) League and the National League (NY Giants) - just about every big league of the day.

Interesting seeing Zimmer as a young, scrawny shortstop known for his speed and power. This photo was taken 3 months before the severe beaning that almost killed him and left him with four metal screws permanently in his head. He was hitting .300 at the time, with 23 HR and 12 SB through mid July. Who knows what could of been if not for that beaning, but this picture provides a glimpse. He may have become the great replacement for Pee Wee Reese the Dodgers thought he would be.

Near Philly
Man, another failed Rocket Launch.

Been a bad year for 'em, and no way to make up for those lost hours, energy and resources.

Plus, the ISS isn't in that great of shape to take a hit like this...

Very nice 2nd inning by the Royals. Also, a nice gesture by Ventura tonight.
