UD confirmed to Distributors that they plan to make 17 Baseball issues next year, the same amount they will make this year.

Whoa. That's a lot of airbrushing. :)

Should be interesting. And if this is true, you have to wonder if the exclusivity will have the desired effect. It might make things even MORE confusing for novices and children (trying to figure out what is an official MLB card and what's just MLBPA approved for instance). If there are going to be all these products out there anyways, it's hard to see the advantage to eliminating their license.

Just goes to show you that Topps will have MORE competition than evreryone thinks for 2010.

Not only will UD make the same amount as this year, but I ASSUME the products will be better and more loaded bcause of the HUGE chunk of money they are saving from not having a license. Dont foget Panini either.

I didn't expect them to just flat out quit anyways. The lack of MLB license may actually free them up to do some really neat things if they get creative.

 Razor haters.

Technically they are sort of licensed, so it's strange situation.

Hopefully a couple of prospect filled products among the 17
They would still have to get the rights to all of the Minor League players.

Regardless, what Upper Deck says now is positioning and nothing more. Basically letting people know that they are "okay" and that this decision doesn't affect them at all. It does affect them...and most definitely will unless their attorneys are pushing a few options regarding not airbrushing photos.

Proper licensing is an important component, without it anyone could make cards leading to an overcrowded, even more complex hobby. I don't know anyone who wants that, except perhaps for a few insane player collectors who will collect absolutely anything of their player :)

Consider whether Bowman would have gained popularity or be where it is today without an MLB license. Possibly not, or at least it might be serving an entirely different audience. Interesting how UD's licensing is opposite that of Bowman, at least with regard to MiLBers, its all starting to get a little crazy - and scary.

I think I'll just stay with my favorite two or three brands for the foreseeable future and just leave it at that.

Bring me a new Prospect Premieres or SP Prospects set.

That would be awesome!

Well my guess is they will be doing a set like Elite Extra Edition, as they have the exclusive with the Collegiate licensing

As long as they hold off on the redemptions, I'd be all over that puppy.

List has been posted of first 5 releases:

1) UD Redemption - 500 cards, all redemptions, all redemptions to be eventually replaced with 2007 UD Ian Snell Star Signings autos.
2) UD Silhouette - forget airbrushing, cards feature players' shadows
3) UD Black — Exquisite Logoman Edition - Industry first, all cards are 1/1 logomen patches! But unfortunately since UD cannot use MLB logos, all patches are painted over with black spray paint
4) UD Razor Ripoff - exclusive prospects, straight out of grammar school
5) UD Cubist Masterpieces - If it looks like a Picasso, we can use logos and no one will notice

We're here :)

I don't know... seems like for at least around 9 years, Bowman prospects have been only half licensed. Half licensed is ok? :D
Who cares really anyway. I mean if someone wants them, they'll buy them no matter what.

I just looked at a 2008 BC card though and it has the mlb logo on the back... 2007 doesn't.

I think 17 products in 2010 from one company is overkill. Eventually, all of our card collections are going to become watered down because of this. With 17 coming from UD we're gonna see around 40 sets coming out in 2010??
I think card companies need to realize sometimes less is better. If UD only came out with one prospect set (prospect premieres or sp prospects), and topps only came out with Bowman stuff, rc's would see much higher values and demand.

Justin Verlander, one of the best young arms in the game, has countless RCs. He's in Donruss, Donruss Elite, Bowman, Bowman Chrome, Topps, Topps Update, Bowman's Best, Diamond Kings, Bowman Sterling, Leaf Certified, Donruss Classics, Classic Clippings, Bowman Heritage (maybe I even missed a few?). Due to this, his BC auto only sells for mid 30s.

With more and more products coming out every year, this is killing the value of some of the cards. Do you think Pujols' RCs would be as valuable if he were in as many products as Verlander? He'd still book/sell for a boat load, but I doubt he'd be at those prices if he had more RC issues.
