Ugh. I just realized Topps has the exclusive MLB license through 2020.

I like Topps, and love old school Topps.
As I was looking through my older sets, I was remembering how much fun it was to collect variety, with Fleer, Donruss, Upper Deck and other companies.

For some reason, I thought Topps' exclusive license ended in 2014, and there was a chance for MLB to wisen up and grant other companies a license.

Then I googled it and realized MLB extended the license back in March until 2020.
I don't know why I didn't remember this.

I just don't like the look of airbrushed cards with no logos on players' hats and uniforms and won't buy them.
It sucks for Leaf and Panini and whoever else is left.

I guess I'll continue to fill in my vintage and pre-2009 collections for the next 7 years, when I hope MLB realizes that it's doing more harm than good to the hobby.
(Sorry for the rant.)

Seriously, it's time for Panini or Leaf to start issuing fully licensed sets for the independent leagues and all those leagues around the world that don't get sets. Need to get my fix on the Atlantic League, Honkbal Hoofdklasse, La Liga Nicaragüense de Beisbol Profesional, Bundesliga and Liga Mexicana del Pacifico. Would it kill somebody to make a Hensley Meulens card in a Tomateros uniform?

It makes no sense. Why give one company a monopoly? How does MLB think this is good for collecting?

Or is it just that Topps was willing to pay the most to buy the exclusive?

Such a shame, Topps will continue to produce mediocre products since there's no one knocking on the door. Nothing pisses me off more than Topps having repeat Bowman prospects n products. I don't want a chrome card of a guy who has been in 3 bowman products before.

Not true...
There was not any opportunity to even make an offer..
How do we know they would have paid more than splitting it up among 3-4..

The license may not be necessary soon enough (to show logos)...

I don't understand how it is lawful for MLB, NFL, etc. to claim exclusivity rights and grant monopolies, then play in stadiums that are funded by the tax-payer. I think Congress, Justice Department, whoever, have dropped the ball by allowing the monopoly exemptions for "private" businesses, yet allow them to take billions of dollars from the tax-payers to prop up their leagues.

I stand corrected, I just assumed (and you know what that means ) ;)
But I'm intrigued like everyone else about your last statement.
We need another player in the logo game. It simply adds an element to the copacetic look and appeal to a card. The prizm and national treasures products have had a great following and are well collected it seems. Throw a logo on there and I would bet they'd outsell any topps product.
Heck I've bought more NT hof cards than I have any singles of topps product from the last 2 years combined. And I love the sweet spot autos. Just wish they weren't so darn hard to get! Need a Ricky henderson and eddie murray

Agree with everyone that it stinks...can't we sign a petition and send to MLB's Director of Licensing?

however, in the big scheme of things not really surprising given that baseball itself is essentially a monopoly and exempt from antitrust laws
