Upper Deck Unveils a Set Twenty Years in the Making

The 2,500 card Upper Deck 20th Anniversary Retrospective Set highlights all the events that have made the last twenty years so special

North Las Vegas, NV (February 2, 2009) – In observance of Upper Deck’s platinum anniversary, the trading card giant is pleased to announce a special new set that can be found in all of the company’s 2009 baseball trading card release. The massive 2,500 card set commemorates the last twenty years in sports, pop culture, politics, world history and technology.

“We wanted to do something different that would really get collectors excited and I think we’ve succeeded,” said Jason Masherah, Upper Deck’s senior brand manager. “Never has there been such a comprehensive set or a way for collectors to own so many unique moments. From Ronald Reagan leaving office and the fall of the Berlin Wall to Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. playing in the same game with the Mariners, we didn’t miss a moment.”

The set captures the moments that gave us all goose bumps whether they happened in a stadium, battlefield or even outer space. With such a comprehensive set, the checklist features some of the biggest names in sports and some of the biggest personalities throughout the world. There should be strong values on many of these cards with players like Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky, Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Jack Nicklaus, Peyton Manning and so many more included in the set.

“Another key element we did to make this set compelling for sports fans in particular was to acquire never before seen images of the games greatest stars during their freshmen seasons,” said Masherah. “We have new card images of Ken Griffey Jr. in 1989, LeBron James in 2003 and Sidney Crosby in 2005 to help collectors see their favorite athletes in a new way.”

Upper Deck’s 20th Anniversary Retrospective set can first be found in 2009 Upper Deck Series One Baseball which arrives on store shelves on February 3 with one card found in every other pack on average. An additional element to the set will be the 100-card memorabilia set which can be found in all sets beginning with 2009 Upper Deck Spectrum Baseball on February 24.

“The memorabilia cards add a higher-end chase element to the set that collectors should appreciate,” said Masherah. “The biggest names from all core sports are included in this special set, so that should get collectors talking. The memorabilia cards will be pretty limited as well with each card falling at a ratio of one per hobby case on average so that scarcity should help increase the secondary market values on these cards.”

Either that is a 1/pack insert or that product is SOOOOOO overproduced!

At 1 falling in every two packs, this subset lacks the "chase factor" of the Yankee Stadium Legacy set but the set is definitely more attainable and should provide a nice look into 25 years.

Set builders should go nuts with this set making 2009 UD Series One a bit more 'breakable.'

curious to see a checklist hoping that my guy is not on it...

its an insert set inside UD series 1

and i doubt canseco will be in it.

I bet Canseco will be in it at least once. He was the first 40/40 man, as well as maybe for the 89 WS with McGwire.

Holy heck! A 2500 card set that's seeded at a ratio of 1 per 2 packs? Any bets on whether UD makes any of them SP's?

The 100-card memorabilia set seeded across their product lines is interesting to me though. If they do it right it could be an interesting multi-sport set to build.

These are really ugly to me.
I don't get why the Griffey is purple unless there are SPs...which I would hope not.

Probably because that's the only one pictured that's designated as a "pop culture" card vs. sports. I'm sure he'll have sports cards in the set too, but this looks like one of UD celebrating itself and their iconic '89 Griffey card.

Is it me, or is anyone sick of UD coming out with large sets?

the only large set to be produced, IMHO, should be the 1,200 card MLB comprehesive set of all players on 40man rosters.

I am not. It provides more value to their products. You could bust UD stuff last year and actually do ok selling YSL extras. As opposed to just having more extras or worthless inserts.
