I have seen redemptions with dates up to 5 years later. That seems like plenty of time to me. Thats the chance you take when you bust older boxes. Busting wax is a gamble in itself. They just make it even tougher on the consumer when they pull expired cards. Its not like they used to give out expired redemptions and they just stopped. They never have and never will.

Redemptions suck, no doubt about it and expired redemptions suck even more. I think it would be wise for the company to produce something that is can be a collectible instead of a card that just has words on it. For example, create a picture card of that player and have the redemption info on the back. That way, when it does expire, you will have at least the said card without the autograph which in turn depending how many have been redeemed will become a collectible instead of piece of cardboard with just words on it.

I think early (1989-1991) Bowman had that when they were offering original Bowman (1948-1955) cards. They'd put a pic of the card you could win with info on the contest and a form for you to fill out.

If the card companies were not lazy/sloppy, there would be no redemptions, IMHO.

These products are not developed yesterday for release today. they have been on the drawing board for months if not a year. Plenty of time to target the desirable players for autograph inserts and write a contract with that player that xx stickers or paper pieces are due back to the card company by (date).

Now, to get around the BS of Topps or Upper Deck representative is present at the signings, those supposed representatives truly can be in some cases. If the player fails to sign/return stickers or paper pieces within the deadline - say 30 days prior to packout - a representative can show up with the materials and the contract and witness the player carry out their duties. If the player fails in the presence of a representative to do as contracted, the card company should eventually file breach of contract at some later date and use existing stickers in inventory of another player to create a replacement card to pack out.

I am one that hangs on to wax awhile so it'd suck if I ever got an expired redemption. If the card companies get with the program and sign proper contracts or take other measures to get the athletes to perform their end of the contract, there should be no need for redemptions. If you really need to have redemptions, then make it so they never expire unless the company folds and force the card company to keep redemtpion product in stock to carry out redemptions no matter when they are sent in or registered on the website.

My favorite is when you get a redemption for an auto and it takes over a year to produce the card...and when it does arrive, there's a friggin' sticker on it. Wasn't the Finest redemption auto of Joba Chamberlain that way?

I have some redemptions waiting at UD for 2008 Ballpark Griffey Auto's.. They have the stickers for the cards.. The company that produced the card had the cards damaged in shipment so UD was in the process of having more cards made for that set. There were two numbers in the set for Griffey and I had 2 of the -72 and 1 of the -43.. I got a replacement for the -43 out of the blue yesterday..

It's a great looking card that I never picked up, and it's an on card auto.. At least they sent a Griffey for a Griffey..

I pulled this card 6 months after the redemption expired.. I received nothing in return.. They had other items that I would have accepted, but when you pay over $125 for a box of cards expecting an auto and when you get one, they don't honor it..

Minors ARE allowed to enter into contracts; however, any contract with a minor is voidable on the minor's part.

It still doesn't change the fact that an expired redemption probably means someone was shorted a hit--something Topps and UD usually make good on, correct?

I think that people who buy wax and/or redemptions are either slow learners, or they don't mind getting screwed. I'll admit that I was a little slow... even after reading story after story about people getting ripped off via redemption, I still had to get screwed over myself before I learned. That said, I haven't purchased a box since 2006. These companies don't care about you, and I believe they actually look for new ways to stick it to people who are foolish enough to buy their products.

I loved the analogy about going to the store and buying an empty box which will be redeemed later. And the thing is, you purchased toilet paper, you really need some toilet paper, and they'll send you... a cheese grater. Except the value on that is way off... with these companies, it's more like you buy a TV for $400 and they say they are not going to produce the TV, so here's a replacement sack of potatoes which has a "book value" of $400.

I have on occasion pulled expired redemptions from Upper Deck and have always sent them in and recieved something, sometimes even the card it was for. NOT the case with Topps, I sent them in an expired redemption and recieved the redemption card back stamped expired. I hope UD stays in the baseball business as they say they will.

Really? I hope you saw the article last week about UD counterfeiting cards.
