Could this set be close to the 96/97 Topps chrome set with Bryant, Iverson, Allen, and Nash... The 2009/2010 Draft class is looking very strong with Griffin, Curry, Evans, Lawson, Holiday, and Collison along with other sleepers..

interesting take.

IF the cards LOOKED better, then i would be more confident about it.

that being said, i still need some wax. i hope Black Friday enables me to pick some up

I agree both the base chromes and the refractors don't have the pop the '96-'97 stuff did.

I just don't think this: [phil:2s9sty7m]110609878755[/phil:2s9sty7m] has the same eye appeal that this: [phil:2s9sty7m]330494708564[/phil:2s9sty7m] does.

The other thing to consider about 96-97 Chrome is that it was THE high end set to collect that year, and the rookie patch auto craze hadn't yet begun. If you wanted the best Kobe rookie card, you wanted the chrome. What do you want if you want the best Griffin, Curry, or Evans rookie? Exquisite, National Treasures, Contenders, Crown Royale? While the Chrome will be tough to pick up, which will keep the price high for specific player or team collectors, the attention of the majority will be split between a number of other sets.

this makes sense.

that leads me to ask.... is Kobe the LAST basketball UBER-Star that will not have a "high end" rookie card?
(when i say "high end" i mean patch or gu or numbered or auto'd etc)

Maybe a notch below, but Pierce, Dirk and Gasol.

Pierce is a homer pick on your part ;)
Dirk has to win to move up a notch imo.
Gasol didnt have an auto in 2001/2? strange. European bias on the hobbys part?

There were a few reasons as to why 96 Chrome was such a big hit. It wasnt exactly high end. It was different. 96 Chrome basketball was the first year Topps introduced the Chrome brand. They also didnt release it to the hobby. It was a retail only product. It actually took a good year before people started demanded chrome rookies. By then, the wholesalers had none and scavengers had gone through retail to scoop it all up. The fact that it had refractors made gave it more hobby love as people fell in love with them from 93-94 and 95-95 Finest. 93 finest also had short prints which people started speculating on as well for 96 chrome.
