I got a slip on my door from UPS that says I owe 24.75 for customs duty for a package shipped from Canada. I've never had to pay it before, but I don't think I've ever gotten a package from Canada shipped UPS. Is this a special thing with UPS? Has this happened to anyone else? I wasn't expecting to pay extra, so I think I'm going to refuse the package and have them send it back with regular mail.

it's a UPS scam, it's worse going the other way. because UPS handles the brokerage they want to collect fee's. Not much you can do, except not use UPS for worldwide service, they are snakes...

Same thing with FedEx I think, I've heard that FedEx and UPS are vigilant about collecting on packages over $20 in Canada compared to Canda Post. This is the first I have heard of it on incoming packages to the US though.

Yes but FedEx doesn't have as high 'brokerage' fee's. I believe that's probably what the OP is getting nailed on as the US has higher import thresholds.

Beware using FedEx to ship to Canada at all. They will leave the package with the customer and send a bill for customs charges. If the customer doesn't pay, they will backcharge the shipper 3-4 months later for those customs charges.

At least UPS holds the package until the customer pays

Irrevelent to this situation, just throwing it out there

I've used CP Xpress Post for 10 yrs with zero problems.

Highest value card was $600 US, which was close to $1K CDN back then.

Oh the good 'ole days :)

I just shipped and received a card from canada and even though it took a long time, no custom duties to speak of.

I shipped 3 cards with a sell value of about 200 and received 1 card with a sell value of about 200.

Both slips were filled out as $10 value.

what was the item?
