I have messaged 2 big time hof patch collectors ( yes there are other guys like christenson, lol, they just don't frequent this message board) and they both think that the Ruth is altered. With one specifically saying they ripped a ton of this stuff in 2002 and not one patch came out of all the stuff he ripped. The other says he thinks all the patches popping up are fake :o and is skeptical of all of them. He has followed the set since its release.

Here is what I have come up with. It's 50/50 as half the people think these are legit half don't. I know 2/5 gold version of this Ruth had a sliver of this same type of patch and most people deemed it not real and or altered but keep in mind we had not seen another Ruth patch from that set until now. I myself am torn and am leaning towards the Ruth actually being legit but here is the problem, the current seller has had just as many non legit patches including some that are up now so I think that is more or less leading to much of the skeptizm and why people are weary and or think the Ruth is not legit. I was going to go after the Ted Williams as its his jersey number and maybe one other but now probably not. It's one thing to question and another to be completely torn, which I am. I recommend that anyone looking for their 1st Ruth patch not try and go after this one as not enough info to go by to 100% solidify its legitimacy. This one may be more suited for deep pocket guys like christensen whom can take a 2-3000 dollar hit should this card not be legit. Thats just my take on it. My patch collection will be just fine not owning any other these cards that are up.

I really appreciate the input and oponion you gave. Thanks mlbsalltimegreats.

I'm just like you, completely torn on it. Other guys I trust are about 50/50 also. I'm guessing I will make up my mind on it in the days to come. If It's Legit It Is A Amazing card. But wow there are alot of questions.

I even have questions on the stitching, the 5 legit ruth patches I own have no stitching on them

A photo database from the card companies of every patch card would have been phenomenal and a great guide to what's real and what's fake. It's a shame stuff has to be questioned, but when you have sketchy ******** that can turn a $100 jersey card into a $1000 patch card, stuff will always be questioned.

F'ing card companies! It really should be this hard for collectors, and this was 15 years again and still nothing has changed.

I think the button hole I posted is a decent one to go off of. It is gold /5 based off of the scan, and I bet can be traced confidently to be real. Does that mean the other 4 golds /5 are prime? And by prime does that mean just button hole or air hole? I do think it is slightly fishy that looking at prior threads/posts/sales that not a single Ruth patch is shown for this 2002 set /5, and it is odd to me that we can't find anything on this patch at all as you would think it would have been shown off somewhere down the line. The owner of the button hole has a TON of Babe Ruth memorabilia cards for sale, maybe send him a question on the buttonhole card to see if he is willing to shed any light he/she might have in regards to that set.

Also, the patch card logo looks bronze. I can't find anywhere that there was a bronze version (as we all know there is a gold version). Does that mean that the logo is actually regular/rainbow and the seller specifically took a picture with the lighting to give it a gold look? Too tough to tell. The patch auction has scans of the back too (which doesn't confirm/deny anything). It is too bad that Leaf didn't put prime or patch on these cards. It is great having amazing terminology on the game used stuff, but too bad it wasn't set up like 2005 Absolute or something.
The card itself for sure Alex but because the seller has or is selling questionable cards makes the case for the current Ruth to be altered. I would like to see ( as we all would) another gold version of this card. The card that is up now is gold foil it's just that the picture isn't very clear. The gold version had the writing below the team logo on the bottom right corner. As for the seller from what I heard he doesn't care either way. He doesn't care if it's fake, shilled or anything but I have not reached out to him personally just from what other have said that have reached out.

Yeah I know we question the seller versus the card (even though they go hand in hand) 16christensen16 has a great point about the jersey patch showing stitching on the patch. I think with that idea, if we can figure out what jersey was used by Leaf/Donruss (find an auction prior to 2002, but most likely 2001 since it is most likely the same jersey they used then) we should be able to confirm if that jersey had patches that were sewn on versus glued or what not.

They were sewn as mine has stitching, very faint but there. Also found a couple more from 2001 certified that had stitching, not all of them did but some. I would post pics but I'm on mobile device and pita to post anything, lol.

And I don't think button hole is real, it's just my gut felling and nothing else.

It's a shame it comes to this. I will examine my 5 ruth patches for stitching when I get home, but I don't think I have any on my cards?

This is all a definite shame, but I think with a thread of hardcore collectors specific to these types of cards, if we don't have confidence or proof then who really does :) I hightly doubt these are cards that were either freshly pulled from old product, or were in a basement/collector that never showed the light of day.
