He was on my highschool baseball team. We were shocked he did so well at Rice. He was our #3 pitcher.

At least I feel a little better about the Mariners taking Jeff Clement as the number 3 pick in that draft........

Those were just rumors, that or he decided to give it one last shot recently. He was coming off shoulder surgery and recently pitched a few innings in the GCL. This was only a formality.

The only reason the Rays drafted him is because the owner was impressed in a predraft workout and he agreed to a contract prior to the draft. The Rays scouts wanted McCutchen.
