According to Jonathan Mayo: #Cards have announced contract with Wagner Mateo has been voided. "Physical exam discovered pre-existing injuries and physical defects."

He signed the highest contract of any July 2nd signee this year. He was supposedly a prospect with a high ceiling, too. ::facepalm::

Because they have physical defects? Racist! Xenophobe?

Kidding ofcourse. I love that line, physical defect. Did he have a third arm?

So I assume this was a bad situation, not something that could be corrected with lenses or surgery? Or can it be fixed, but they're being cautious and may resign him at a discounted price?

It seems or at least what I have read that the Cardinals had him take a physical and it was found that he had a severe degenerative eye disease that would ultimately lead to probable blindness...

According to Mateo and his agent, it was something to do with his contacts...

The last update I saw, the Cardinals had voided his contract pending any new results from more tests that he is currently going through....

From the sound of things, it looks like he has had this eye condition and kept it quiet for good reason, and unless some new test drastically proves otherwise...I dont see this coming out as a good situation for Mateo...

I am glad it was caught and for the Cardinals sake they can move on and reinvest the money elsewhere now before they invested a lot of time and money into Mateo's future.

Well, I guess they could now go after Miguel Sano if they like him and feel comfortable with his situation.

Looks like to me he has this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macular_degeneration

Tis a shame, but since they've said that the money they have for Latin Prospects is set aside, meaning this money won't affect the payroll (if you're thinking they'll use this money for Holliday, you're wrong), I suppose they could now go after Miguel Angel Sano?
