Simply put, Panini mass produced a lot of sets this year and demand is just not there. Vest example is hall of fame which came out two weeks ago. Lack of quality control in the case hits coupled with high numbered autographed cards forced away collectors.

I think I mentioned this before to you.....but the resale value last year was horrible.
I bought a few products - had what would seem to be above average hits. Patches, All-Star vet auto's. Nice looking cards......but the "ebay value" would wind up about $15-30 a box. I mean in most of those products you could pick up an Evans or Curry rc auto for less than a box price.

So it seems like the wax market is just adjusting to that. At $47 a product like Court Kings is probably a good break.
Maybe it's just the basketball market as a whole - more so than the other sports it seems to be about the HUGE hit.....the big names, the scare cards. It stinks for Panini because they can put out something like Crown Royale and it's not really their fault that the secondary market stinks......personally I love the look of the cards, but when an good break brings like 20% ROI it's a tough sell (and I'm aware just about every break looses money....but when it's consistently that much, to me at least it's a problem).

So many products, produced in huge quantities made even "decent" hits lame.

Seriously, why number a Kobe Bryant jersey card if there are 600 of them? Same with the USA Dream Team jerseys...is it really important the serial-number a card with over 1000 copies that's just a base jersey?

I was actually thinking about this a little bit today.

I thought that for one - its a new football season and baseball is in its stretch run - so basketball is really in the back of everyone's minds now.

I think people are also looking forward to 2010/11 Sets considering its been some time since the rookies have been drafted and LeBron made his decision.

That being said, Court Kings original SRP was $100 so that's gone in the tank. But I think collectors might come back to 09/10 in general because Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings were outstanding rookies + Blake Griffin may come back strong. The RC's in this years draft will be lucky to have the seasons Jennings and Evans had - so maybe collectors will notice this in the coming months.

All I know is that its great for basketball collectors because you are saving some money over buying it when it 1st came out. And if this seems like the trend with most products, you might as well wait until its gone down in price. Used to happen a lot when there was a new product every week - now that its only '1' company making hoop cards - you've got to wonder if there is long term sustainability with these SRP prices.

The only time I ever bust wax is when we see the big price drops like these, it is idiotic to bust this crap at release date.. just throwing away money

That's true to some extent......but if you're ripping knowing you're primarily looking to sell - if you get them up on Ebay quick you're going to make the most profit. You may get $20 for an auto a day after release, but a few weeks later it could settle down to $3-5. Doesn't mean you still aren't losing money......but that's probably the one positive.
