Manager A.J. Hinch wouldn’t come out and say it, but it’s becoming more and more clear that right-hander Brandon Webb will start the season on the disabled list.

“We are running out of time,” Hinch said.

General Manager Josh Byrnes said last week that Webb likely will need to appear in a Cactus League game by this weekend in order to have time to build his innings total to be ready to start the season.

“We’re getting to the point where we’re going to need to address that,” Hinch said. “Is it a couple of days away? Probably. We’re going to need to see what he looks like next on the mound. You never know once he gets on the mound if we can speed things up as much as we slowed things down in the last week.”

Webb hasn’t been on a mound since a week ago today, a bullpen session he said felt “stagnant.”

Having Webb start on the disabled list would seem to be a psychological blow to a team that had been putting so much hope in his return.

“I think that’s an interesting point,” Hinch said. “As we get closer to the start of the season, if he’s going to miss any time, still having him getting stronger and getting better should negate kind of the letdown (if he starts on the disabled list). He’s an important guy and an important ingredient to our rotation. But a healthy Brandon Webb is more important than an active Brandon Webb.”

...I really hope he can rebound and be productive, but im not holding my breath.

He's had some arm/shoulder problems for the last 2 seasons. Im not sure if the Webb of old will be back

Gotta agree with you, here. Webby was a great pitcher but coming back from a torn labrum is really tough.

I think for the D-backs to expect the Brandon of old is asking way too much of the guy. IMO, best case scenario is he's carefully handled in 2010 while he gains his strength, stamina and stuff back; still gets huge payday in 2011 from someone (probably in the short term fashion, however); and regains form.

It's tough listening to the homerific local sports radio around here in Phoenix. These jerks were honestly hoping 220+ IP from Webb this season. Would be lucky to get 140...

I totally agree.

I think the best place for Brandon is somewhere with a healthy rotation that doesnt need him to be an ace.

The AL is best suited for him in terms of pitching because the rotations are alot deeper there.

As much as I hate to say it, a great place would be a NYY type rotation where there are 3-4 amazing pitchers on the team, and dont need Webb to be a horse. Boston would be ideal too.

I really dont see Webb getting more than 10 starts this season and probably working from the pen upon his return

Honestly, I hope they can trade him for maybe one young arm (A Tim Alderson type) by the deadline.
