Manager A.J. Hinch wouldn’t come out and say it, but it’s becoming more and more clear that right-hander Brandon Webb will start the season on the disabled list.
“We are running out of time,” Hinch said.
General Manager Josh Byrnes said last week that Webb likely will need to appear in a Cactus League game by this weekend in order to have time to build his innings total to be ready to start the season.
“We’re getting to the point where we’re going to need to address that,” Hinch said. “Is it a couple of days away? Probably. We’re going to need to see what he looks like next on the mound. You never know once he gets on the mound if we can speed things up as much as we slowed things down in the last week.”
Webb hasn’t been on a mound since a week ago today, a bullpen session he said felt “stagnant.”
Having Webb start on the disabled list would seem to be a psychological blow to a team that had been putting so much hope in his return.
“I think that’s an interesting point,” Hinch said. “As we get closer to the start of the season, if he’s going to miss any time, still having him getting stronger and getting better should negate kind of the letdown (if he starts on the disabled list). He’s an important guy and an important ingredient to our rotation. But a healthy Brandon Webb is more important than an active Brandon Webb.”
...I really hope he can rebound and be productive, but im not holding my breath.
He's had some arm/shoulder problems for the last 2 seasons. Im not sure if the Webb of old will be back
