Might seem like a strange question, but hear me out.

I primarily deal in baseball and as anyone in baseball knows, the rookie cards of a big time player or a top prospect can be very volatile, and a big season, or something as small as a no-hitter or 4 home run game can create a big spike in prices. Trade rumors (when NY and Boston are linked to it) also bring increases.

Recently I decided to pick up a basketball card that seemed to be a solid price (of course I'm no expert.) Picked up a Rondo Exquisite Patch Auto /225 thinking that with the Playoffs here there's a chance that his cards will go up, and either way it's a pretty sweet card. My question is, the card is basically a $150 card now, what would it take for it to go up? Is winning the most important thing? Do assists count for anything hobby-wise or are points all that matter?

edit: I do realize that as long as that seller has so many Rondo Exquisite's on eBay there is little hope of any real price increase. Anyone know why he is selling out?

well sad to say assists really dont make that much of a difference, check out deron williams who put up just UNREAL numbers this year so far in the playoffs and his spx card has jumped from 40 in the regular season to 60 right now. Key to making money (and when i say money i mean BIG money and not just 20 profit) is scoring plain and simple and yes i know rondo gets to the basket and scores but he has no outside game what so ever....prime example of a scorer is kevin durant..picked up a threads rc auto of him for 80 in the offseason could have sold for 250 if i wanted to...and even teh big names such as lebron can still make money, this postseason minimum im going to make 400 off his spx which i picked up this summer as well...

Not to sound like a broken record, but if it's not Jordan, Lebron, Kobe - the basketball market seems to be down across the board.

I think even more than stats, the big price jumps come from publicity. The established collector's already probably have his cards or know how good he is, so you really need the non/casual collector's to jump on ebay and start looking for his stuff. I'd have thought the Celtics win and having the 19 assists would create a little buzz too - but maybe it'll take his name being said on ESPN non-stop the next 48 hrs. for a significant change.

Off the top of my head - the players (and what it took) with some of the largest/quickest jumps in price were Derrick Gibson - his rookie year when they went to the finals and he was hitting all those 3's. Brandon Jennings - after the 55 point game. Darren Collison - after cp3 went down and he was starting........but in all those cases they were guys who were not heavily collected before any jump.

ever heard of a guy named KEVIN DURANT...his prices jumped more than anyones, and as for the rookes no matter what position they play there cards are going to skyrocket if they do good in there rookie year such as curry, evans, jennings, collison and so on but they will have to do GREAT within the next years for them to rise in the next years

I think to see significant gains you need to be selling during their rookie year. Guys like Durant that solidify themselves as being top 5 players in the league can see a jump after their rookie year, but those guys are few and far between. It just seems like in basketball you either cash in on their rookie year or won't see much for profit, except the very rare instance like Durant. I think with new talent in the league every year from the draft, most of the hype falls on the rookies and it's almost impossible for guys like Rondo to grow in value.

No who is that?

I didn't mention him due to the OP comparing this to baseball prospecting. Where a call-up or one/two big games create a huge demand and inflation, with a short window to make money.

Durant was one of - if not the most valued rookie in his class. His prices have gone up in a more natural progression, it;s not like there was one night where you could buy a Durant auto for $10 and the next morning flip it for $75.

With Rondo I don't expect a "prospect-like" increase. I imagine it would have to be more like the increases that players already in the Majors have; either slow and gradual due to consistent high-level play, or a big moment that puts the player back in the spotlight and has people notice what they've been doing for a while.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

not for ten dollars but you could buy his spx scripts rc auto for 30 to 40 in the offseason and sell for 110 which is a 70 plus value...kind of like jason heywards sterling earlier this year correct?

I wish I could find that youtube video showing his cards at a card show.
That was an insane collection of Rondo and Perkins.
