What does Johan Santana have to do to be a HOF'er?

With his return looking pretty good so far, I was wondering what people felt Johan had to do going forward to become a future Hall of Famer?

His peak was really pretty amazing in a 5 year stretch he won 2 Cy Youngs, finished 3rd twice and 5th once (and absolutely should have won a third Cy Young in 2005 the year Colon won despite having an ERA .61 higher than Johan, 81 less K's etc.)

His career W-L is 133-71 so he obviously needs to spruce up the wins total but his career ERA is the best amongst active starters with 1000 IP at 3.10.

I'm thinking if he can put up at least 3 more seasons where he is in the top 10 in Cy Young and get to a record of 220-120 or so, he has a decent chance. Not sure he'll be able to do so, but I hope so.

I think 3000 Ks will help alot. For some reason 3000 k's gets dismissed alot when infact there are less people on the 3000 k's list that there are on the 500 hr club, 300 win club and 3000, hit club. 3000 k's is one of the hardest milestones to reach!

I think he certainly needs at least 200 wins, and that will be a tough milestone given his age and crappy team. Damn shame those injuries took years away from him.

77 wins to 220 would require 25 wins over 3 years or 19 wins over 4 years....i think if he got to 220 over 4 years and got to 3000 ks its possible but not likely hell get those wins....But he prob needs 6 great years to get there

It sucks that he plays for a crappy team right now cause he really might have HOF talent, but if you do look at the 3,000K club, they are all HOFers or future HOFers for sure with the exception of maybe Clemens who would only miss the hall because of steroid issues.

lefties tend to be able to hold on longer so if he can stay healthy and pitch another 5 or 6 years, its not a stretch that he can get to 200....

would require him wanting to finish out his career that way.

He's 33 this season, and many pitchers have shown that as long as you adjust as your "stuff" diminishes, you can be successful to around 40. I'm think that if he has 3 more really great seasons (say close to 20 wins and an ERA around or under 3) and then pitches decent for 3 more, he may get there. 90 wins in 6 years is just 15 a year, (though on the Mets that may not be too easy.)

10 is a bit high, though many seasons have 7-8. If he gets votes a few more times, and is able to stay around until he is 40 or so, I think he has a shot. His peak was not quite Maddux, Randy Johnson or Pedro, but other than those three, I don't recall anyone (off the top of my head) who was close in the last 20 years.

seriously, he's been on bad teams and been injured lately so unless he goes Nolan Ryan and starts hurling no-no's and gettign 5000K's he won't make it. had he been healthier and on teams that dont require him to win 1-0 every time he would make it
