Honestly, I feel sorry for any of you with wives or girlfriends who don't like your collecting. In all honesty, as long as the bills get paid, and you have some extra money you can spend, what the hell is the problem? Why on earth most females seem to have an issue at all with it I'll never understand. IMO, I don't need a woman to buy me any cards and I don't need her to be involved with my hobby. In fact, I don't even need her to know it exists. Just like when she watches the Bachelor or Lifetime Movie Network, I'm not involved and I could honestly care less. That's her time and it's what she wants to do. If she wants to be that's cool but I don't expect anyone to care about my hobby at all. I think at the root of the problem is all the women I've run into seem to want total control of the money in a relationship and overlook their own spending. Yes that purse may be the third one she got this month and yes it may have been three hundred dollars but dammit it matches her outfit so it was a must! Yeah...I'm calling BS.

All of my ex's hated my collecting(no matter what it was) and always dropped the "how much did you spend" card on me. I guess I've developed a pretty jaded attitude about it now. The one I'm with is absolutely fine with it, likes to look at the cards, buys me some at walmart and target from time to time, and will attend shows and autograph signings with me. I'll never in my life get together again with a woman who has even the slightest issue with my collecting. IMO it's something I love and it's one less argument I'd rather not have. If you jump into my life and all of a sudden you start dictating what I can and can't do(within reason of course), then we've got some pretty big problems and I would have to assume they will only get worse. I understand guys who are married with kids can't just walk away over something so trivial. But if you aren't married, I'd caution the hell out of you before you are, to make sure you know where you sit. And if you are married, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. No more cards? No more purses.

I'm willing to be that most of you guys' past girlfriends were all more tolerant and understanding than my past boyfriends. Not a single one has ever approved, I often would get the "Spend that money on Clothes or makeup" and other stereotypical stuff. And every single one at one point (usually right when they find out) say, "isn't that a guy thing"

My wife doesn't participate in my hobby, but she knows I like it and supports me doing it. My hobby has managed to finance itself, so it's never gotten in the way of our budgeting.

However, I have liquidated bits of my collection as my focus changed and family needs arose.

That's the exact boat I'm in...in fact, closed on my house with baseball cards.

That said, my entire paycheck goes to a common bank account, and I let my wife do the budgeting. When I was the money man, she'd spend freely, with no concept of the money she was dropping...so I had her take over the budget. It's been great, and, since my hobby has always proliferated itself, it was always from a separate budget to begin with.

This hobby is like gambling, you either have a controlled addiction or you don't. I collect but I also do a lot of buying and selling that makes me a fair share of money. The majority of that goes to my wife's hobby and that's buying stuff for our daughter. Needless to say she knows how easy it is for me to predict who will be in the major league's and who wont.

By the way, buying purses and shoes is not a hobby to me.

Regardless, my wife and I are a part of each other's lives, and that includes our hobbies.

Some of you sound you either don't want to be or shouldn't be married in the first place.

My gf (soon to be fiancé) is a baseball fanatic like me. If the Indians are home, we are at the game, if the Indians are away we are at a minor league game. So when it comes to collecting, she's totally on board. She has a pretty decent little collection of her favorite players.

Whenever I get boxes/cases we open together, and do pack wars which she always wins.

She doesn't understand prospecting though, I can't tell you how many times I've heard "How does it make sense to pay more for a guy who has never played in the majors than a guy who is an all star?!"

It doesn't bother my wife at all. She is probably more curious about the hobby, if anything. Since I bring home the vast majority of the income and because she can tell it makes me happy and I enjoy it, she is all for it.

Pretty simple. I think she will appreciate it even more when we have a house an I can have my own office or man cave where I can display it all, etc.

My wife always asks me about the cards I get in the mail, and she loves the fact that I'm so passionate about Michigan football. She's asked me before why I don't just sell everything, but when I mentioned it as an option once, she told me I better not sell my Michigan "stuff". Overall she's pretty understanding about it.

Wow...even you guys who say she simply tolerates it don't realize how lucky you are.

Mine insists she wants me to collect and have fun with it, but quite honestly my collecting is the cause of the vast majority of our arguments. She thinks I spend too much. I have no debt, I make sure all the bills are paid, and the savings keeps growing. However, if I only spent $10/month on cards, she'd be upset that our saving isn't growing by $10/month more. If you ask her, every single bubble mailer addressed to me has a $400 card in it, which means that if I get 3 bubble mailers on a given day, I just dropped the equivalent of an entire month's mortgage payment on cards. Lately I've been selling my older stuff to fund newer stuff. At first she was cool with that, but now all of a sudden she wants to put a % on how much of my sales has to go into savings. If I agree to that %, then next month she won't be happy and will want to increase the % again. It's so tough to work with her on this sometimes.

A couple years ago I humored myself into thinking that one day she would realize how happy the hobby makes me and she would buy me some blasters for my b-day or a couple rack packs as stocking stuffers, but those days are over. Eventually I'll cave to all the nagging and I'll end up losing my 1st love to make my 2nd love happy

Start putting some money away she doesn't know about so you have your own savings/bank account, or run all your transactions thru PayPal after selling cards, it keeps the wife out of my business. I never use my bank account for card purchases (money debiting directly from the account versus using PayPal balance)

Either she is worried about your financial future or she is money hungry woman who likes to complain and will divorce you and take all your money.
Oh wait they all enjoy complaining.
