Like on Amazon.com, you can list items in particular categories.

Textbooks for example maximum standard shipping is $3.99 with the option to offer expedited shipping for $6.99, the flat fee to sellers is 15% before the shipping credit is given.

DVD's have a minimum shipping cost of $2.98 and this includes DVD sets. There is no option to charge more or less, you just get what amazon decides is a fair cost to the consumer.

If eBay were to institute something like this in categories such as collectibles, how do you think the market would react? At least there would be no more need for fracking DSR's.

Well, Id image if you are buying the paypal shipping labels, they really couldn't say much. Otherwise, if people aren't slamming your dsrs, they should know you arent ripping people off.

They do cd's.

Would be nice for Ebay to throw sellers a bone and have a 5 minute rule on bidding. Any time a bid is made in last 5 minutes. The auction time rolls back to 5 minutes left. Like MLB, NFL, NHL , NBA auction do.

You're limited on shpping costs of DVDs through eBay. I suspect cards are just a matter of time.
That's kind of where I was headed with this. The problem is it actually costs me about 2 times what amazon is provides to ship some items, like a DVD factory sealed set (Johnny Carson if anyone's interested BTW ;) )
But cards are a different story. When using the paypal shipping it automatically discounts and provides a label. I suspect the actual cost of shipping will soon be the norm for cards on eBay, thus doing away with any need for DSR's that are already becoming obsolete if you offer 1 day handling, print label within 24 hours of payment receipt, and the USPS delivers the package within said projected shipping time. Ohh and communication is now an automatic 5 stars if you don't have to contact the buyer.

So what the hell did eBay institute the system for in the first place?!?!

I would absolutely LOVE a dynamic auctions feature, and would be willing to pay extra (like say 10 cents). It doesn't even have to be 5 minutes, maybe just 2 minutes. Yahoo Auctions used to have it when they were around, and I always used it, for obvious reasons. This would however, put a real wrench into the plans of those who use sniping tools.

I buy and sell vinyl records on there periodically and the max you can charge to ship one is $4. If the postage alone doesn't exceed that, try finding someone who will sell you an LP mailer for less than $1. Many sellers simply only offer local pickup as a shipping method and explain in their auctions that they're doing this to circumvent eBay's ridiculous policy. They sent the appropriate invoice and most buyers, as far as I can tell, don't care.

If you think this is wild, you should see how they treat international sellers. Their cap (to ship to the US) is also only $4.00 USD.

I'm sure there's some positive behind it... like people are willing to bid more if the shipping is less, and there are fewer $1 items in this market than in cards so rarely is it a complete loss, but yeesh.

Yeah, to hell with the never ending auction crap.

I know, Ebay is all for the buyer and just bends the seller over. Sellers don't even deserve any chance to get more bids in with a five minute type rule. Screw the way MLB, NFL auctions do it. They just screw the buyers there.
But it does help buyers who lose out on a last second snipe and gives them a chance to get in and bid again when auction would go back to 5 minutes left. AH screw that. Sellers would still benefit.

Ebay will ASSume all sellers use stamps.com & print their dc & have a room full of brand new bubbles AND have a po next door.

Then they will slap a $2 max on shipping.
