Just wanted to see if you hockey guys think it would be as popular as it is for baseball. The thought of a Sidney Crosby Autographed Superfractor or Red Refractor got me caught on the idea :) but i personally think it would be pretty cool if Topps still made hockey cards

Well before the UD exclusive took effect for the 05 season, Topps did have its Bowman Chrome product in Hockey. While they were nice cards and did have some collectors, they were no where near as close to as popular as they are in Baseball. Hockey collectors love the base UD brand (The Young Guns), SP Authentic and The Cup for the most popular Rookie Cards. Before The Cup existed, the best RC to get was from Premier collection. The most popular is always the Young Guns. Remember, the NHLPA has a rule where a player has to appear in at least 1 NHL game before his RC can be made. With this, all the sets are on a level playing field for RC's. I bet if the MLB had the same set of rules and all the companies got to make the RCs all in the same year, Bowman Chrome would be not nearly as popular as it is now.

I do look forward to the day Topps, Panini and of course ITG are granted rights to manufacture with NHL and NHLPA consent. Topps has never been my favorite company but I like the idea of some product diversity and I have always been a fan of chrome sets, refractors and of course the x-fractor and superfractor parallels. I think hockey would follow of similar vein of football where the chrome sets have a following of collectors, but as Bilko said, I doubt they could or would ever reach the status of one of the most sought after rc's in the hobby.

like the others have already said I don't see there being as much of a draw to Chrome with hockey collector's as there is with baseball but I agree I would definitely like to see another company or two granted a NHL license. I would prefer it to be ITG over Topps though. I think Topps does a great job with baseball but I was never a fan of their hockey cards after the 80's.

I really liked the 03-04 Chrome product, but there wasn't a ton of it made - Base autos are /250, Refractor autos are /50, Xfractors are /25 and Golds are /5. If they kept that limited run, I'd definitely be into it.

I just need to have another NHL option, because my secret one-sided fight with UD has gone on long enough!
