What happends if your favorite player gets traded/signed to your rival team?

Just making an example here. Lets say your favorite player is David Wright and you're a Mets fan. You live to watch David Wright play on your team. He then gets traded to the Phillies. Even though Wright does'nt want to be traded, he does indeed get traded to your rival.

As a Mets fan, do you secretly root for Wright in Philly but hope the Phillies lose every game they play? Or do you automatically go against Wright and hope he blows his career away?

I had the same scenario with Donovan Mcnabb a few years ago when he was traded from my Eagles to the Redskins. I don't even care for him anymore and hope he throws a pick every time I watch him play.

Just thought this would be an interesting thread.

McNabb for me as well. Stopped caring when he went to Washington. If he goes to Arizona I'll follow him again. But not when he's a goddamned Redskin

If Washington goes after Vince Young, I'm gonna throw Dan Snyder in a wood chipper

Happened to me when Austin Kearns was traded to the Yankees, man that was a tough one for me. Thankfully he was only there for a few months but it was kinda weird rooting for a Yankee...

Favre going to the Vikings was rough...was happy Rodgers was starting, Favre was in New York, it was a win win. When he went to Minnesota, heart was ripped out!

Afraid of what will happen with Prince Fielder, I swear I hope he does not end up a Cub!

It would suck, but I'd have to nut up and still support him. Chad Greenway as a Packer would make me violently ill, but I'm so used to the Packers having Iowa alum on their team, that I'm sickly used to it by now.

Team first. And I'm about to experience this with Prince Fielder. Or a variation thereof....

Continue to root for the player but not the team. Had this happen with Dale Murphy, Joe Montana (could not stand the Chiefs) and Jeff Francoeur.

I've also found that I won't buy cards of the player unless they're with their original team.

I'm an Indians fan and the White Sox are a pretty big rival, but I don't really mind seeing Vizquel playing for them. At the end of the day I pull for the Indians and hope whatever team he's with has a good shot at the World Series.

Great thread, I just had this discussion with my dad this morning. I am an Indian fan, and my favorite player is CC. Now he plays for the Yankees. It's an interesting situation, and I've been happy a lot of times! This last series is a great example, the Tribe took 2 out of 3, and CC won his game. Couldn't be happier! CC's first game against the Indians was awesome too, he allowed 1 ER and when he came out the Indians put up a 9 run 7th to win.

There are also nice things like he won the WS. I don't think he would have ever done that with Cleveland. Also, watching the Yankees offense is much less frustrating than watching the Indians.

I was a Favre fan too, up until the second he signed with the Vikings, that was a slap in the face to the Packers. He chose the road he took, I retire, I unretire, I retire, I unretire, I retire, I unretire.............was happy to see the team move on to Rodgers at that point.

The greatest Viking moment for me, during the Favre era, was having him get crushed in the NFC Championship game, see that ball sail in the air (as a Packers fan we had become accustom to it) and hearing hundreds of thousands of hearts break simultaneously.....man what a great sound and feeling.

Luckily for me Bagwell and Biggio were Franchise players, never leaving Houston. I thought the same would be true for Berkman and Oswalt. Then they left Houston. Now I have stopped collecting their cards and have even traded them away to get Bagwells for my PC.

Oh, anyone out there want Berkmans or Oswalts? If so, check my site and let me know! Dang traitors...

Same thing here with Francoeur. I'll root for him regardless of the team he goes to, but I won't root for the other team.

If Adam Wainwright went to the Cubs or Reds, he'd still be my favorite player. I would hope he wins a Cy Young but the team sucks (like Hernandez with the Mariners).

Well Brett Favre happened so its not a what if.

Right, but some of us aren't ignorant sitting here pondering what if. We are letting the OP know with our voices of experience what we went through when our favorite player went to a different team. Once you've already gained this enlightenment, it is pointless to ponder "what if".

Well, even though we are usually ahead of you in the standings, and we usually beat you guys head to head, we still consider you one of our "rivals". ;)
