Which is precisely why Topps made him an auto -- the novelty of being ambidextrous.

Just like the novelty of including 2 Indian pitchers.

Just like the novelty of including "Ernie Banks".

Do you seriously not see this as a gimmick????

It's only cards, bro. Chill.

And, Banks was reportedly removed and replaced with...

It might be someone who has a first name that sounds like a well known board members last name. (spelled differently of course) :)

Of course this is a gimmick and nothing else. I'm curious to see if Topps succeeds or not. By the initial reaction on this board, it seems to have turned away people but who knows about the general rest of the public.

I, for one, would be happy to pull an auto or dual auto of the Indian pitchers. I wouldn't mind keeping it for PC, but you know it'll go for a lot when selling. Just dual signed baseballs were getting 30-40 earlier, though I haven't checked in a while. Just the fact that they are the first 2 pitchers from India will raise the price a ton, regardless of their performance. Not everyone who buys BC are prospectors and maybe it'll help them gain customers outside of their niche market. We shall see if this works.

I can certainly see where everyone's frustration with the auto checklist is justified, though as a collector I'm thrilled to see three Pirates on the auto checklist.

As far as Rinku and Dinesh go, it's a bit surprising to see them in the auto checklist. When Topps got them to sign their contract, both guys felt that they were tricked by the company into signing, and expressed a good deal of resentment towards the company. Then again, this contract may be the reason they had autos. As far as the value their BC autos will have, I think it will be a big disappointment. While early in spring training some of their autos on balls or 8X10's were selling in the $20 range, they have since dropped off significantly. Both players will be playing for the Pirates GCL affiliate this year at best, and will likely be an afterthought by the time BC releases. A nice attempt by Topps at generating some cheap PR, but probably about 6 months too late.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree that the auto checklist is extremely weak!

Yeah, good point. It's a little too late to fully capitalize on that PR move. It probably wouldn't have the effect that Topps anticipates, though I'll probably pick one up for PC when they drop significantly from their initial release price.

it isn't as weak as you think

Autographs I will consider good pulls.

Viciedo
Hanson
Freeman
Marte
Dellgado
Brett Anderson
Carlos Santana

Regardless of previous chrome cards, these will sell well.

What has changed is that I don't think I will ever prospect base chromes again. If the player gets good, they are bound to make an autograph. When Jordan Schafer spiked, the blue refractors from 05 almost doubled. Good for them, the base chrome autograph went from $8 to $52.

Lesson learned.

One word -- GIMMICK.

Same with the guy who happens to share a name with the greatest Cub ever, and the ambidextrous pitcher.

When my wife heard about that, she laughed and said "Cooper Brannon". You may recall a couple years ago on the Beckett boards, I built up Cooper Brannon as the best prospect in baseball. I said he was an ambidextrous pitcher who threw in the high-90s left handed and had a devastating knuckler with his right hand because he had two of his fingers blown off in Iraq and he could grip the ball with his nubs. The part about his fingers being blown off in Iraq was true.

Most people were in on the joke, but some apparently weren't. I saw a Brannon Gold Refractor sell for $24 at the height of the hype, while they had been selling for a couple bucks before that.

Good times.

Wow, someone actually remembers. MaddoxBT, yes.

Someone did a search and found another guy who had a Boston Terrier named Maddox and posted his pic and claimed it was me. I have no idea why, but apparently that was really supposed to "get" me. I talked some smack to the troll that ran the hockey forums there, and poof! MaddoxBT was gone, and the legend of Cooper Brannon was gone with him.

I salute you sir as my better in the ranks of smack talkers.

Yeah, you're right, I did. I bragged about my prospecting ability and buying power. Not trying to talk so much smack these days. You kind of had to be larger than life on the Beckett boards because they effing deserved it.

I am done for the most part buying wax
Might just do it when bored and have itch
Buying singles the route to go

I think it's tough to rip on a checklist and comment negatively on checklist because not all are guaranteed stardom but then propose a checklist idea for Razor where you want hundreds and hundreds of players on their auto checklist (about 5% would be "good pulls")

A gimmick India dude or a foreigh player from Taipei, Japan, etc might get some foreign buyers but printing a 50th round yankee or red sox because of the big market isn't any better

Either way, looking forward to seeing some box breaks

If I was compared to Jim Abbott I would be happy with that.

~10 year career, no hitter, 2nd? in Cy Young voting one year.

Seems like a guy I wanna be compared to.

Saw him hit the center field fence as a hitter and get a triple against U of I. Awesome sight

He was a really good QB in high school. Amazing athlete. Couldn't have picked a better alma mater either!
