1996 Leaf Preferred Steel Bronze Promos #40 Derek Jeter

This is my white whale knowing how hard they are to find or get for any player collector. I was lucky to get mine most super collector's are missing this card and probably have never seen it. I believe Dave (small traditions) said it best on his auction that ended as a Silver Jeter PSA 10 copy that went for $1524.00 back on August 3rd 2014 Probably a month before I got the Jeter Bronze Promo. But he talked about these cards and didn't believe the Bronze Existed till I got my Jeter. I was supposed to meet up with him at the Nationals but we didn't catch up so he has only seen scans like most of the player collectors.

http://www.smalltraditions.com/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=14640

Easily the scarcest of all of Derek Jeter's rookie period promotional cards, precious little is known about the 1996 Leaf Steel Silver Promo other than that it is among the scarcest of all Derek Jeter's cards produced between his draft year of 1992 and his Rookie of the Year season of 1996. The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards (SCBC) reports that the Leaf Steel Promo was originally designed with three parallels -- Gold, Silver and Bronze -- and was one of the largest and most ambitious promo card issues of the 1990s. According to the SCBC, "Cards were reportedly distributed to dealers on the basis of one gold promo per three-case order. The silver and bronze versions were reportedly never officially released, though examples have found their way into the market in some quantity."We've never seen a 1996 Leaf Steel Bronze Promo card of any player, and we do not believe they exist. Examples of a particular player's Gold Promo, on the other hand, turn up at least a handful of times per year, but the Silver Promo is another story. A quick search on eBay shows just 22 single card listings from the 77-card set with just two completed sales in the last few months, confirming just how scarce they are. Need further confirmation? Then consider that this is the first Jeter we've ever offered in any grade, let alone in PSA 10 Gem Mint condition.

I'd think you'd be able to locate a silver fairly easily at $200-250. When I mean easily, a few come up a year I believe an the price isn't crazy.

In terms of what Small Traditions said in that auction which was only last year, there was def multiple Bronze Promos existing so I would think a lil' research would of taken that out of the listing.

I have never seen more than 2 of any player so multiple must be 2 it's still my White Whale as I have only seen 1 Jeter and other Jeter collector's have only seen scans. As a matter of fact a big Jeter collector named Paul used to own 1 of every 1992 to 1996 Jeter card and when I asked him if he still believes he owned all the 1992 to 1996 collection before he said he still feels that way because the Mirror Gold Proof and the Bronze Promo's are so rare he doesn't consider it. When clarkfan told me he wished he bought the Bronze Promo years back but he thought the guy was asking too much at the time is now willing to pay $3500.00 if he knew where it was and that was what he told me September of last year. I am just happy to own the Jeter and it's my white whale. I do believe it's my rarest Jeter 90's card as well until it's proven other wise even beckett doesn't have a price and how many 90's cards do you see that on before 1996?

Dang , no idea the market on his items. Good luck sir!

Ryan

I don't think those prices have anything to do with the guy on then, but the extreme rarity of those sets. I'm no expert, but I'd imagine they're probably only a notch or two below the 1961 Dice Game in terms of rarity. I'd bet a Ryan from either set could break $3k or $4k all day.

I would gladly pay a decent sum for this card, assuming it wasn't pulled and thrown away:

2003 Sweet Spot Instant Win Redemptions #235 Dick Pole CO Jsy/1

I don't even know what it is (a redemption for a full jersey? A 1/1 jersey card? Lunch with Dick Pole?) but I want it.

Yeah I get it , I'm sure those sets are tough all around. But even with that, still a lot larger prices on the NC items than I would of thought. And good luck on the Dick Pole search.

Your posts are confusing to me then. You listed a link to a Silver Promo , and mentioned the Silver Promo while speaking about your WW.

A "White Whale" as being being discussed here, is what is the card/item out there that exists that you haven't been able to land/find. Not something that you own such as the Bronze.

So my reply was in regards to your post about the Silver (Not Bronze) being your White Whale. I also responded to what was said in the ST auction listing about them believing Bronze don't exist. That auction was 2014 and there multiple players of Bronze existing by 2014.

Now in regards to the Clark, I owned that, and had it since 96/97. Nolan (clarkfan) and I tried to work a deal for it, and it just didn't work out at the time, though I wished he could of owned it.

Oh no I only used his page as a reference you being a Will Clark fan why did you sell the Bronze Promo I wish I could help him out and other collector's. I believe there are probably between 20 to 200 of the Silver Promo's I have heard 20 can't remember where but you see the same one's listed over and over by the same seller and you don't see the Super Stars too often in Silver. Gold you see all the time and Bronze is pretty much non existent I believe mostly because a lot are owned by one individual who I was trying to help sell but people just didn't like his prices. I can tell you I would have dropped up to $3,000.00 for the Jeter I own but thankfully he took a bad picture and labeled it wrong where I ended up getting it for $70.00 as an offer since I was high bidder at $35.00 by the auction's end and everyone thought it was a Gold not a Bronze. I bought the Griffey Bronze strictly for trade bait for a high-end Jeter card I would want. I guess if the price was right I would sell it though but right now I am just sitting on it. I thought it was crazy a PSA 10 copy went for $1500.00 made me wish to have graded both Silver Promo's I used to own and sell the lower grade of the 2. I still made out on them though bought my first Silver Promo for $150.00 then bought a whole set for $109.00 sold the Griffey for $75.00, the Jeter for $250.00 and most of the others though I believe I have a few still like Arod, Darren Daulton, Randy Johnson and Craig Biggio other than that the set I bought is gone.

Small Traditions is all about making money. I would take what they say with a grain of salt.

It's not just one for me. About a decade ago I decided I wanted all/as many of the 2004 Leaf Certified Cuts Ruby Torii Hunter autos as I could get. Haven't seen one in ages, only got 3 of them.

Oh ya , I totally get that. My point was it sounds dumb that they even state none exist of the bronze when by 2014 , there were def some on the market. And a lil research would disprove their statement.

My reason was $+trade I received back made me feel ok to move it.

2013 BBM Legendary Foreigners 2 Deep Impact Autograph Hensley Meulens #/48

I have only seen two for sale. Both for over $120. As much as I love my Hensley Meulens collection, that's probably more than I've spent on the entire rest of the collection. Unfortunately, the set wasn't as popular as the first series, so not as many boxes are being busted, making it even harder to find. This is Meulens only certified, pack-issued autograph card. I really want this card, but not $100+ worth.

Why? It's the last card of a project I've been working on for over 5 years.
