For those who have the itch, but don't have the funds for the high end stuff, especially in this economy, what is your favorite cheap wax (<$20) to open?

In baseball, I like to crack 89 Fleer baseball, just for the chance of a Griffey or some rare variation cards.

In other sports, I love 1990-1 Upper Deck hockey - I love the design, and it is just a beautiful and classic initial set.

I love opening minor league junk. It's fun pulling cards of Frank Thomas that once sold for $20+ and are now easily found for $0.50 or less. Or picking up boxes of them for $15 or less that once were up in the "premium" box category. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez annoy the hell out of me because of the way they jack up the prices of 1993-1995 minor league boxes that would otherwise go for $10-12, but instead sell for more than $30-50.

CA.
Put me down for 1989 Fleer as well.
I've busted so many cases. CL w/positions, Treadway, Johnson, numerous rare FF versions, WO, WS, Saw cuts and a few other very rare, unlisted versions. Best I found was a saw cut on a rack. Someday I'll find more. P.S. There is a rare FF variation only avail. in cello. You'll easily know it if you find it. I have one and know of 2 others. Very rare and easy to replicate.

1991/92 Score Hockey, any series (Orr Auto)

Along with these, I'd say 1991 Donruss (Sandberg Auto) and whatever series of the early 90's UD where you could find the UD Heroes autos. Anyone know what series you need to get for the 1992 donruss and score for the autos?

1992 Score Baseball (Joe D Auto, and the triple autos)
1992 Donruss (Ripken Auto)

I always liked 1991 Topps. That was the year I got back into the hobby and it was a very nice set, great photos, etc. I always wanted to rip a case to try and pull one of the 40th anniversary buybacks, even if it was a 1978 Biff Pocoroba. But cases are actually not easy to find and they still go for about $200 when you find them. I'd do it for $100.

I like the idea of 1990-91 UD Hockey, though. I never opened any of that, but it was always a favorite set for me.

how is 80's OPC to open?

Terrible

Imagine a bunch of diamond cut, 90/10 centering and edges that were cut with dull plastic butter knives and that is 80s OPC. I open them for PSA subs. Very tough to find gradable stuff. For a while, 10s in the 86s were going for big bucks.
