I am at work having a chat with a co-worker regarding our fandom.

I am a Mets fan, he is a Yankees fan.

here is the thing. He hates the Redsox through and through, but only because he is a Yankees fan and they are rival teams.

With this belief, he firmly suggests that I should hate the Phillies with the same cailber that he hates the Redsox, and only for the reason that I am a Mets fan. I tried to explain to him that I was born into a Mets family, and grew up in a Mets environment. I do not hate the Phillies because the Mets cannot win in the final month of baseball, I do not hate the Phillies because they play better/stronger/harder than the Mets do, and therefore make the playoffs and win a title (I Do Not Like Jimmy Rollins...he's a dick). I respect the fact that the Phillies go out there and win games and play good baseball. I am not a fan of the team, but I can certainly apprecaite a well assembled team, and the efforts of the players on that team. Wether it is the Phillies, Mets, Yanks, Sox, or even the damn Royals, good baseball is good baseball. My co-worker asks me, "As a Mets fan you must really want the Phillies to loose...", to which I reply, "I just really want the Mets to start winning"

So what kind of fan are you?

A baseball fan, meaning you dont really follow a particular team, but you really enjoy the game as a whole.

A generation fan, who inherits fandom from family history

A band wagon fan, we all know some of these...I am a Yankees fan this year, but next year I will be a Giants fan, and the following year I will be a Tampa fan, etc. Also note, these fans will never truly admit to being who they are.

A respective fan, you will always have your team, never faultering, but you can appreciate the accomplishments that occur in the game regardless of what player or the team which he plays for.

A DIE-HARD fan, meaning you are like the respective fan (you will never give up on your team), but you are a big POS that has nothing better to do than promote your team as the greatest F**king show on Earth, and have no good damn reasons behind why. (not to be confused with people who actually know what they are taking about, but rather that fan that hears it on ESPN and repeats the shat like they are Keith Olberman). These fans are mostly made up of Yankees & Redsox fans.

If you are a different type of fan, please feel free to describe yourself.

None of the above.

I'm a fanspector.

(Fan + Prospector.)

Meaning, someone who not only roots for a player to do well so that he can profit off his cards, but who roots for his personal success as well.

As a fellow prospector, I high five that statement, but I am not refering to cards in this post, but the game of baseball. While one is impacted by the other, baseball doesnt rely on baseball cards to have a future.

You went a long way to make a Sox/Yankee hate topic.

This isnt about hating any teams. I respect the history behind each of the franchises and the talent and efforts of the players. I am simply asking about a persons fandom, what type of fan, and where the roots come from.

I personally think Mariano Rivera is the best closer baseball has seen to date, Derek Jeter is an amazing athlete and captain, Josh Beckett is a skilled precision pitcher, and Kevin Youliks plays the game with as much heart and anybody before him. I have not particular bias against either team. My best friend and his entire family are Sox fans, and my sister jumped ship on the Mets when she met her husband because he is a Yankees fan. On my wall I have a Jeter Auto Jersey and I have a Rickey Henderson Sox Jersey, beside that I have my Piazza Jsy, Ripken Jsy, Wright Jsy, and Shawn Green Jsys (Mets, Dodgers, DBacks, and Toronto).

Thank you for understanding the post. I feel this is the category that I fall into also. I will always be a Mets fan, but I enjoy the game entirely. I also feel that good baseball is good for the sport, especially after the strike and loss of fans during the 1990's.

A respective fan. It's just a game. Some people take this too seriously.

Guys, don't derail this topic. It is a good one.

I would call my self a respective fan, although I do hate the phillies. I can call my self respective because although I hate the phillies I can't help but admire Chase Utley and how he approaches the game.

Fine

I'm a Marlins fan who has nothing against the Braves or the Phillies (note: I don't consider the Mets or Nationals real MLB teams, therefore no real viable threat)

I am a fan of the game. Just 1 team I really can't stand and that is the O's. They need a new owner.

See..as a Mets fan, I could simply start arguing you about your comment regarding the Mets, but I dont care enough to. You are a fan and you stand behind your team, but WHY? What led you to root for the fish?

The Marlins are a young team that has limited talents, but still go out there and play their asses off. I think that Hanley Ramirez is the best shortstop in baseball, and I think his numbers can speak for themselves.

You are entitled to your opinion. Simple as that.

I guess I'm sort of a bandwagon fan... Brewers last year, Yankees this year.

No, I'm kind of a player collector fan. While I waste some energy hoping that the Indians do well, I also follow the players I collect. It sucked watching the Rangers this year just hoping to see a glimpse of Jason Jennings coming out of the bullpen, but I did it. And I have been hoping the Yankees win the WS for CC's sake since the Indians season was over, which was about 3 weeks into it. :|

So yeah, I've always been an Indians fan, but I like to see the players I collect succeed, which usually means I have to hope their team wins, even if it is the damn Yankees. :)

OK, see a fan who has a reason to dislike a team for a particular reason that is a ligitimate reason. Not simply "because they are they Redsox" type of answer. If you dislike a team, have a reason, dont just say BECAUSE...that drives me nuts.

This is how I feel towards football. I love the game, but I dont have a certain team to root for. I kie to see particular players do well though, EX: Peyton Manning, Marques Colston, Joseph Addai, just to name a few.

I'm not sure how I'd classify myself.

I am a White Sox fan first and foremost. I picked them up as a kid because I idolized Frank Thomas. I quickly became a fan of Robin Ventura, Ozzie Guillen, and other Sox of the early 90s. I'm a fan to this day, and will never falter. When it comes to cards, I take anything with the player pictured as a White Sock. It could be a former player, a long gone prospect who fizzled, or even a modern card of an older player. I don't bother looking for cards of the guys from 1919, with the exception of Shoeless Joe (although I only have a few base)

I can root for the Pirates as well, as long as it doesn't have a negative impact on the Sox. They'd be considered the home town team, and I catch a few Altoona Curve games a year, so I see some of their prospects in action. I became a fan of Jon Van Benschoten when he played for the Curve, and was with the Pirates. He recently ended up in the Sox system, so I was doubly happy.

If Rasputin rose up from the pits of Hell with a team of demons to play the Yankees, well hell, I'd probably have to go out and buy a Rasputin jersey and cheer away. I have always hated the Yankees, and always will. I don't like their money first approach to the game they have sometimes had, and still hold much of the PED scandal(s) against them.

I dislike any players who have been confirmed to use PEDs, and don't forgive them just because they give a sob story speech and go back to being a productive player. If a player from the Sox were confirmed, I would immediately abandon him. I want to see an even playing field where the winner is decided on who has the greatest chemistry with their team, athleticism, and skill. Not who has connections with somebody like Brian McNamee. I'd rather watch a guy crank out 15 home runs a year naturally than one who cranks out 40+ juiced up.

Congratulations if you made it through my mini novel.

I would say I am both a respective fan and a player fan. I love my A's, but loving a team that routinely trades away their fan favorites, I have become accustomed to having to follow many other teams (i.e. Zito with the Giants; didn't miss one of his starts last year).

Im a die hard fan, I root for one team and have for a very long time. I hate all other teams and it ruins my day
when my team doesn't win. Would I throw my phone against the wall, maybe, maybe not, but I have
certainly screamed at the tv once or twice. Both my baseball team and my football team have won
titles recently so when that happens you are on cloud 9. I can't stand people who bandwagon or root for
teams just cause they hate other teams. If my team isn't in it I am hoping that they both lose!

I would say I am a die hard who is NOT a piece of ****, as you alluded all die hard fans are. Though I do dabble a little in the respective side, I hate when my team loses and brag when they beat a rival (ask Sam Banks, he'll tell ya). I will admit though, I am not afraid to jon a Red Sox or Yankees bashing thread, as I do not enjoy the team, nor MOST of their arrogant, annoying fans.

At the same time, I take baseball for what it is...a game played by grown men. I don't get upset over petty things (like Prince Fielder and the Brewers: untucked shirts, silly celebrations, et al), because the game SHOULD be fun.

So, I am a respective die hard who has love for only one team and wishes nothing but losing to all the other teams in baseball.
