What kind of profit does case busting turn?

Or does it at all? I wouldn't mind trying it if it turns a decent profit, but it seems to me you would lose more than you would make.

This is just my opinion.

If you are looking for a profit, case busting is horrible. Even if you are just opening a box, what are the odds of getting your money back. I opened a box of Topps Unique baseball when it came out and I hit the "Case hit" which was a logoman auto 1/1. It was some relief pitcher from the Angels and it sold for $53 on ebay. Not saying you are going to open a case of Topps Unique, but when you open a box hit the case hit, and it doesn't even pay for half of the box, I would say it isn't very profitable. Overall, my favorite cases to bust were 10 box cases of 2008 Heroes baseball when it was about $52 a box and 2007 Sweet Spot Classic 20 box cases when it was $65. Those cases I actually didn't turn out bad. I would say that when you choose a case, choose one that has lots of inserts and hits. For some reason, the Heroes inserts sold well. There were around 200 inserts in the case including Yankee Stadium Legacy cards and some of the inserts would sell for $7-$10. But that is the only case that I have gotten nearly my money back.

If you're thinking that opening a single case will yield you a profit....forget it. You would need to open many cases to POSSIBLY turn profit.

I would never think, that you should make any kind of profit when buying a case. Or even cases. Because if that was true then every case would be even more over-priced then there are now. When buying a case just know it is a form of gambling, and only spend what you can afford to lose.

In order to make money on cases, you have to be able to sell all, or at least most, of the base cards. Bowman Chrome and Bowman Draft Picks are usually profitable, but you have to bust enough cases to accumulate at least 20 count chrome lots of the base prospect cards. Typically, you have to bust at least 8 cases to generate those chrome lots. Then, you have to efficient in listing your lots early, as well as sorting and shipping quickly.

A typical bust will generate a profit of about 15%. If you pull some of the better cards and send them to BGS for a quick 10 day turnaround, you can increase those profits to about 20%. These costs include supplies (boxes, bubble mailers), postage, grading fees (if applicable), etc.

With a typical chrome case costing on the order of $600, your initial investment would be about $5000, with an expected profit of $750-1000.

It's about 50 hours of work to bust, sort, list, and ship 8 cases, and more if you submit them to be graded. You have to scan the better cards as well (but not the chrome lots). Overall, you are only making about $15 an hour...

But it's a hell of a lot of fun, if you have the time. With 3 small kids, I don't have the time anymore.

With the way he asked the question, I think he's under the impression something offers guaranteed return.
If ANYTHING offered guaranteed return - EVERYONE would do it. Those who make profit with this (as with anything) just bust their ass and work smart to get the cards accumulated and sold.
Your average buyer isn't going to make a profit.

agreed - takes more than 1 case to turn a profit (unless really lucky);
and you can't keep anything.
Don't think you'll keep a hit, sell the rest, and still make money.

Ace tennis this year is the best product I have ever seen to rip, sell and profit.

It is loaded.

This is the baseball board. Keep it on topic.

This is a warning.

I say fooey on your warning.

Anyway, my case of Ace Tennis yielded 3 Federer autographs, including 1 dual with Nadal. As well as a Nadal rookie buyback autograph.

I've seen over 10 cases

All have hit a similar jackpot.

I'm guessing bulk case busters like TNT are probably doing well since a new pile of stuff gets listed with most new product. You would generally need lots of money up front and time to develop a reputation. You would also need a lot of time to bust, sort, scan, list, and package the stuff... essentially a half to full time job.

If you're not buying cases direct from the manufacturer and receiving them the day of (or before) street date you're already starting at a disadvantage.

Your best bet for making money on less than a handful of cases of the same product is to hope the set turns to be really popular either a) because of the checklist (see: 2010 Bowman) or b) sheer value (see: 2009 Ultimate Collection) and hope for a per-box price increase. Unfortunately, this method presupposes you can sit on unopened wax without getting the itch...
