If you're not buying cases direct from the manufacturer and receiving them the day of (or before) street date you're already starting at a disadvantage.

Your best bet for making money on less than a handful of cases of the same product is to hope the set turns to be really popular either a) because of the checklist (see: 2010 Bowman) or b) sheer value (see: 2009 Ultimate Collection) and hope for a per-box price increase. Unfortunately, this method presupposes you can sit on unopened wax without getting the itch...

A lot of the big rippers buy from the same places we all do, but they commit early and put thousands on the table. They assume part of the risk, and are rewarded if the risk pays off.

You can't buy all you need direct from the manufacturer to be a big ripper. Call topps and try to buy 25 cases of Bowman Chrome and see what happens.

I understand everything you just wrote--I'm the Wax Czar for my LCS and deal with direct accounts--but there's a lot of mistakes that can be made along the way. Like not springing for same-day shipping when pre-ordering from blowout/atlanta/global/wherever. UPS ground is pointless if it's just in the name of saving a few bucks.

Anyway, it still boils down to whatever Topps packaged in the cases you're sent.

Outside of Bowman Chrome, you should look into Elite Extra.

But heres the key, you need patience. If you NEED to make a profit or most of your money back asap, dont do this issue.

Its loaded with prospect autos, from top of the line to bottom of the bunch and much in between. Thats where the key is, the in between guys. Unless they are a middle relief 24 yr old or some mega weak hitting college kid, do not sell the "common" autos for 99 cents plus shipping.

Look at the last two EEE issues and you will see what I mean.

Out of the 6 cases I've busted, I've only taken a loss on one. 2008 Bowman Chrome. Other than that I've sold most of the hits and always came out ahead. But I'm probably one of the luckier ones as I have seen some guys get ***** with their breaks. As with anything it's a gamble.

Out of the 4 cases I have busted, here are the numbers (approx):

07 BDP: +$500 (nothing left)
08 Razor Sig. Series: -$300 (About $50 left, ~55 autos)
09 Topps Chrome: -$100 (Aroldis Chapman Gold Ref 9.5 and tons of base left)
07 SP Cuts: -$215 (Luke Appling Cut/59 left)

Based on those numbers, I am going to break close to dead even on those cases once I sell what I have left.

Unless you hit a monster pull (which I got lucky in 07 Draft and did) it is very tough to make money consistently busting cases. (Unless you work your ass off and preselling 20 ct. lots, etc. like BCA, tntnorth, etc. and time your sales perfectly)

I will probably save for a case of 10 Draft... that's going to be it

My box of TriStar (lol haha) didn't do to bad... I could MAYBE make my money back on it, except there was a sliver of a sunflower seed shell close enough to one of the Hit's edges to give it a small brown spot...
