Taking last names into account, who can come up with the best team of 9 with the same last initial?

Ruth, Rose and Rodriguez?

Cobb, Clemente and Clemens?

You get the point. Who's the best in the alphabet?

I like the letter M.

OF - Mantle, Mays, Musial
1B - McCovey
2B - Morgan
SS - Maranville
3B - Mathews
C - Munson
P - Maddux (or for old-timers Mathewson)

And for extra credit: DH - Edgar Martinez, Manager John McGraw, Executive Lee MacPhail

I'm going to have to also go with M based on what I could think of off the top of my head.
If I think about it, might change my mind though.

I'm going to see what "Y" would field, for obvious reasons.

Yasterzemski
Yount
Cy Young
Rudy York
Youkilis
Michael Young
Ross Youngs

That's about the best I can do without adding in guys like Delmon Young, Chris Young and Eddie Yost.

If you substitute Mauer for Munson, you have an entire team of Hall of Famers, if Mauer makes it (and I know he's a first baseman now, but he won three batting titles as a catcher).

Are you starting a franchise and looking for a long career? I would want Pedro over Maddux on any given day. Maybe not a better career, but a better pitcher.

He's right, Josh Gibson would clearly be the catcher and I can't think if one good reason Hank Greenberg couldn't be asked to switch to 3B. I like G a lot.

I think the letter R could be very good. Though it seems to be lacking at 1B.

OF - Ruth, Frank Robinson, Jim Rice
1B - Bob Robertson (?!?), There's got to be somebody better than that. Heck, how about Anthony Rizzo)
2B - Jackie Robinson
3B - Brooks Robinson
SS - Ripken
C - Ivan Rodriguez
P - Ryan

It's a tough call, but I think Maddux was a better pitcher. Maybe if it was one game, I'd take Pedro. But if it's a season or career I'm taking Maddux.

For first base. Let's continue a theme, 4x All Star Eddie Robinson, heck I think we can make a team of Robinsons

You're a Michigan man so I'm inclined not to argue with you, but Pedro's best seasons were better than Maddux's best seasons, Pedro's prime was better than Maddux's prime. Career yes, Maddux was amazing with incredible longevity. But if you could have 1997-2004 Pedro, there shouldn't be anybody else you'd rather have. Go Blue.

Frank Robinson at 1B and Manny Ramirez in OF (or Sam Rice in OF if you don't want juicers, lol)

What, no Paul Waner in RF??? Terrible omission, Jay! Final grade: D- :-P

EDIT: I'd also put Billy Wagner in at RP, too.
