I have been collecting on and off for years now. I always switch back and forth between Basketball and Baseball, never keeping anything when I switch. Thanks to Panini owning basketball (and pretty much sucking at it) and not being a huge fan of college sports (so UD is not really an option), I have decided that from today until the Day the World Series ends this season, I will only be opening baseball products(yes, opening wax, I do not buy singles at all. I know I lose money, but I still enjoy it so don't even bother telling me to buy singles :P ). I also have no interest in team or player collecting as there is no one team or player that I feel would let me focus on collecting and still enjoy getting random hits. I plan on opening current releases as well as past releases.

So the question I want to pose to the boards is in 7 or so months, which cards should I have (hopefully) pulled that when I can share my collection there is really not much missing. I have a few ideas, but I want to get some options of what different people consider makes a well round collection of one sport.

Thanks

Also, which products do you feel would be the best to open to achieve these goals :)

I think a good mix of Hall of Famers and current good players is a great place to start.

Then I would hope for a few patches and dual autographs to spice up the collection a little bit and maybe some parallels or refractors.

2008 UD Heroes is always a good bang for your buck, but if you have some money lying around, 2011 Topps Tribute looks incredible.

There's no such thing as a "well rounded collection." A collection should consist of whatever you want it to. If you like to gamble, then open packs and boxes and see what you get. If you already know what you want, then just buy singles, no matter if it's base cards of Bob Hamelin, superfractors of today's top players or stolen base leaders that were only born in the month of February.

Bob Bescher?

Robert Henry "Bob" Bescher (February 25, 1884 – November 29, 1942) was a former baseball outfielder who played 11 seasons in the major leagues. Born in London, Ohio, he played his best seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, and was one of the National League's best base stealers during his time.

If you are a player collector or a set collector you need to have a few to die for 1/1's.
