This would be a great thread to include videos in the OP. I'd watch some of these catches over and over.

Great List and there are 3 other Guys that come to mind that have made great catches which are Kirby Puckett, Torii Hunter and Ichiro.

Jacoby Elssbury has made some catches that make my jaw drop

Probably not the best catches of all time, but they sure are the greatestt catches I have seen in my lifetime!

for me its ozzie smith when he dove and reached behind him barehanded to snag the liner and than threw the guy out at first...any type of catch doesnt compare to that.

I agree that this is the greatest play ever but I don't know if it qualifies as a catch because it did hit the ground. For me this is a no brainer, Jim Edmonds gets a lot of crap for trying to make easy plays look difficult (I personally disagree with this) but that catch was just out of this world, best ever.

The Mays catch wasn't as good as the throw afterward. There are 10 catches a year better than that one but because of who it is and when he made it the catch somehow ends up on lists like this one every time.

Mays is the gold standard, but catch his is what All Quiet on the Western Front is to war movies. It it the greatest ever? Probably not, but it set the standard and nothing has set a new standard since. Everyone still follows "The Catch" as the one to be better than, even though catches have since topped it.

i voted edmonds, btw.

Best viral Gatorade ad ever. When this video first showed up so many people thought it was real.

absolutely not. He missplayed that ball so bad, that he threw his hand out there in desperation to catch it.

Still ended up being a nice catch.

Jacoby is another guy who missplays balls and gets awful breaks. He make way to many plays a typical CF makes routinely into a highlight reel catches

That's the point. A catch is a catch. By that thinking, one could say Edmonds had no choice but to make a spectacular dive because he was playing too shallow.

There are others left off the list that should be included. I'm thinking Sandy Amoros in '55 or Brooks Robinson's spear in '70.

Plus, it's hard to overrate this:

But I voted for Edmonds because it was just a cool play.

nice catch maybe, but awful play on the ball. It was total luck he caught that. The other plays on the list showed great skill and athletism
