Wow amazing how things have changed. :shock:Craig Smith said:1951 Topps all series.
My allowance at that time was $1.25 per week. That was a bunch of money at that time for a 13-year old and it paid for the Saturday movie, drinks, popcorn, and candy with money left over to save for cards. I had to ride my bicycle about 3 miles through Nescopeck and Berwick to get to the little Italian grocery store that really stocked a bunch of boxes of Topps.
I don't remember exactly how much a box was but it had to be less than $3.00.
I also sold cardboard from the local furniture store to supplement my income. I probably made at least $.50 weekly from that to throw in the pot.
I remember when I finished the set and my buddy still had about 5 cards to get. Boy was he jealous.
During high school my allowance increased and I had a paper route that netted about $10.00-12.00 weekly so I was rolling in money.
After finishing all the sets through 1956, I started college and my spare money was spent on books, etc. My college tuition per year was about $500.00 so there was no spare money for cards.![]()
