Say you have 1500-2000 to purchase whatever you want card wise. I'm a hof auto collector that pales in comparison to some of you but, would you...

1:make one huge purchase on a card you typically wouldn't/couldn't afford

2: make several larger purchases 3-4 cards of high end names

3: buy one or two and upgrade a few PC Cards?

Keep in mind you would not be trading, selling or upgrading these at any point so the quality has to be good.
Getting overwhelmed looking through eBay and other sources and the multitude of options available to go in any direction.

Depending on what's available, and how patient you are, go for the big one.

I would make one nice purchase, some possible options that come to mind are a 1933 goudey Ruth, 1934 goudey Gehrig (the yellow one), E-90 Cy Young or a T-206 Cobb. Plus these are all pretty liquid so if you ever needed the money back you could most likely sell them for near what you put in.

Go for the gold. Wait for something immaculate to come along that you can hang your proverbial collecting hat on.

I would probably pick up one amazing card that I couldn't live without and would blow people's minds when they saw it.

1-2 cards that you can really cherish. You probably will have access to cheaper items whenever. And I agree that if you choose right , the item should have liquidity if you ever needed to cash out soon.

Have a bit of time to decide but sounds like one big ticket item is the way to go. As with all things patience is key. I'll certainly post when a pickup is in hand

I think if you budget $300/per item, you can probably find some really nice HOF auto/patch or auto/relic certified cards or some nice HOF signatures and grow your HOF collection by quite a few rather than just grow it by one signature piece if you spent the whole pot on one item.

Question, are you looking for HOF auto cards, HOF landmark cards, HOF GU cards, a mix of these?
If its auto card, I say go after one of the big three, Ruth, Cobb, Young. I realize it might be impossible to land a ruth at 2k, but you just never know, being at the right place at the right time may pay off.
If its player landmark cards, then I say go after 2-3 cards. You can get low to mid grade cards that look amazing.
If its GU, then I say 4-5 cards, again focusing on the likes of Ruth, Cobb, Young, Gehrig, etc.

Go big or go home! Can't wait for you to share with us your new addition.

This! I would also definitely try and focus on something that should retain its value over time so that if you ever did decide to move it you could do so easily. Card aren't always the most liquid of investments and if you sink a big chunk of change into this I would make sure there is a resale market.

good luck!

I disagree, its much easier to come up with $300 than >2k.

If something comes up that you want that is that pricey and you blew it on a bunch of small cards you may regret not buying the big ticket item.

Looking for autographs either pack certified or on something certified that can be made into a custom and resubmitted.

Ruth and gehrig are not even in that price range but my searches lately have consisted of Cobb, FOXX, Hornsby, W Johnson and Mel Ott. Have those saved searches and adding a few more names to the list probably today.

I know exactly what I would do: I'd obviously go for the one big piece. But if I was receiving that big of a chunk one way or another, I'd use that $ and save the rest to get a Ruth cut auto. It's the ultimate auto for me, and one I may never ever afford.

Even if you don't choose that route, I'd still choose the one big piece for my collection, as it could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
