I have a few:

Joe Dimaggio Pinnacle auto #2 ( I know they pop up, but I havent had the funds to purchase it or I have wanted some lower priced cards as well at the same time)

Kirby Puckett 2002 Archives Auto - not many pop up
Eric Davis 1986 Topps Originals Auto - only 15 in circulation
Willie Mays 2003 Heritage Auto (not the red version) - not many pop up
Mike Tyson A&G Auto or Sportkings Auto - go for $225+
Jim Brown 2001 Topps Legends auto - same reason as the Dimaggio
Bobby Orr 06/07 Parkhurst Auto - same as the Brown and Dimaggio

These two Vizquel cards:

1996 Pinnacle Aficionado First Pitch Preview #98

2004 Topps Black #143 (/53)

Do you have the 1992 Pinnacle/Score 4 card sample promo sheet? Saw it on ebay when searching for Clark promo stuff and knew it was pretty hard to find.

Still looking for these:

A 1992 Oklahoma State Cowboys a college team issued set that has one of the two cards I need to finish my Jay Canizaro collection. The other card I need to finish the set is a 1998 Shreveport Captains WK Sportscare minor league card, this set I am fairly certain wasn't produced although Beckett has it listed.

I thought a "white wale" was a rare card which you've been trying to track down for years? A card that on any given day 2-3 copies can be had doesn't exactly fall into this category.. Most of this thread is simply a "want list" of cards that are readily available. Just saying

My white whale of the moment is a 1987 Boardwalk and Baseball Cal Ripken, with no slash between the 2 B's. For some reason I cannot seem to find a copy of this card!

I've got a whole list of "white whales" but I either can't afford them right now or would rather not say what they are :)

I have been lucky in that the last year and a half I've picked up 5 cards that were on my top 20 list.

I always looked as a "white whale" as a card that you want to add to your collection, but for whatever reason you aren't able to. To expensive, rare, or whatever. If you can't land it into your collection and you want it there, it would be a "white whale".

Time is definitely a factor though. Consider the reference 'white whale' - Ahab and the white whale didn't resolve their 'relationship' right away.

Agreed. But I was under the impression that the term in reference to cards represented this almost mythical card which has only been seen a few times and has eluded "capture" for years, same as in the story in reference to the animal. Quite different than a card from a set which has just released in the last year or so, or if you see it all the time and just don't have the money to buy it at the present time.

Does it really bother you that much? A white whale can be different things to different people.

Yes. I'm bored and sometimes I enjoy arguing my point. Thanks :D

Believe it or not, the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr RC.

"Back in the day" it was impossible to find and I couldn't afford it anyway. I bought a low box of 89 UD the other week and didn't land not one Griffey.

Could I just go buy one for $20 on ebay? Sure. I'd rather get one out of a pack on my own.

Fair enough, and I agree with you to an extent...

As far as the white whale I posted... it seems like it should be a really easy card, but I've been looking fairly regularly for the last year and a half and just can't come up with one. In the meantime I've picked up the following for my Ripken collection: 1990 Donruss Aqeuous, 1986 Meadow Gold Milk Carton, 1993 Select Dufex Proof, 1998 UD Retro Quantum Leap, 5 of the 1996 Liberty Sports, 1985 Kitty Clover and KAS discs both in PSA 10, 1997 Score Team Premier Club, 1989 Tetley Disc (full panel with Bedrosian and the offer carD), 1997 Score Jumbo, 1984 (85?) Rawlings Glove Tag, etc.. All that and I can't find a stupid 1987 Boardwalk and Baseball with no slash!

I do have a few of them, but thank you for checking with me! It's one of my favorites.

Sent payment out today for my white whale. I'm going to keep everyone in limbo until I actually have the card. It's a big one and it will stay in my collection FOREVER. It broke my personal record for what I paid for one card.

I forgot to respond to my own post months ago. The 1980 Charlotte O's Police issue Ripken was my whale. Finally found it, hooked it and reeled it in. Now I would love to find a 1968 Topps Venezuelan Ryan. Bouwob has the only one I've ever seen.

Mine is the Will Clark 1992 Donruss Diamond King Super. There are others that would be...maybe White Tuna or so, but that's the whale...

I have lost this card twice on Ebay and I am pretty sure that I will never see it again.
