i'm reintroducing myself to this board, so i'll chime in here. I didn't read the whole thread, but read several pages.

I would have to agree that self-proclamation as a "supercollector" is simply an opinion that too many people share about their collections. To truly be recognized by your peers stands out much more so. When a fellow collector thinks of YOU when they see a certain unique or highly desirable item, then there is a good chance that you are a "supercollector" or at least you do the best job of advertising your collection to the world. Either way, you are well know to have a collection far more impressive than anyone else. We all have to assume there are collections that never see the light of day that may be super, but in today's age of online collecting, ebay and similar sites, etc., it would be very hard to be obtaining all of the key items that become available w/o people taking notice of you.

To me, a "supercollector" is the one person who builds the greatest collection of a given player (or other theme, but generally the term has been used to describe player collectors more so than any other category). This will have to include not only the desire and passion to collect to that level, but a bit of luck, help from others and maybe most importantly (unfortunately) in a real world scenario, the finances to pull it off. TO MAKE IT SPECIAL, THERE CAN REALLY ONLY BE ONE, sorry to say (in my opinion). The rest of the field can have fabulous collections, but they are not the #1 .

Generally speaking, that will include the basics like card issues and oddball items. Most player collectors will dabble in some of the real high end items, like game used memorabilia, but let's face it, that stuff is exceedingly expensive in many cases. I'm going to guess that most "supercollector" types are not wealthy beyond the imagination where they are in a position to buy just about anything that might come available. That leaves most of us to be a "supercollector" of the basic affordable items. I'd be willing to bet that just every "supercollector" type has lost out on at least one item at some point due to cost. I have an impressive collection of my player. i might have the single most inclusive collection out there. I don't know. I do know that I lose things to price often enough to know that I can't own it all and what helps is that the items I lose are not going to the same person over and over. i lose to a variety of people and sometimes they are not even a collector of that player, per se.

Now please send any unique Steve Garvey items or leads my when if you see them! Thank you.

No one else has access to the world you carry around within yourself; you are its custodian and entrance. No one else can see the world the way you see it. No one else can feel your life the way you feel it. Thus it is impossible to ever compare two people because each stands on such different ground. When you compare yourself to others, you are inviting envy into your consciousness; it can be a dangerous and destructive guest.

There can be more than one supercollector for each player. Collectors need to realize this and calm themselves. Different definitions of what to collect and different available means of how to collect it - different strokes for different folks. :)

It's all in the perspective or interpretation. You say more than one, I say one only. I bet we'd have people lining up on both sides with good arguments. Neither is necessarily wrong, we just have different opinions. Player collector is a definition that can include any level of collecting. Supercollector takes that beyond just collecting a certain player, in most people's eyes. If you have MANY supercollectors, are they really all that "super" or are they all just advanced player collectors? It's not bad to be average, as everyone can't be above average and you'll always have those that are below average to balance it all out.

All the Rickey collectors on here (myself included) I consider to be Super Collectors.
