Jackson, I assume you've noticed it, but do all hershiser cards have an error where the top border is printed over his hat?

I've never seen a copy with the border printed across the hat. It seems to stop about 1mm into the hat on every copy I have seen. There is an error version where a 2mm gap is found in the black border.

FCB lurker and never-poster here, but this is too random not to share --

Was reading this thread yesterday, and jackson's blog posts about 1991 topps variations, thought "neat"

Bought a cello box for $5 at a show on a lark

2nd pack, pulled a white-border Drabek (jackson mentioned they sell $100+, last one on ebay sold BIN for $35)

How rare are they?? Anyone here want / need it?

Gonna open the rest of the box now, maybe it's a "variation box" full of Hoiles / Whiten / etc ... ??

Oooooooh neato! I bet you would sell the remainder of that J-U-I-C-Y box... If the price is right! Am I right? Sounds like another troll to me. Show us a scan. Better go rip the rest of that box! You never know...it could be filled with ultra valuable Dave Stieb and Juan Samuel base cards!

Whiten errors have never been reported as coming from the $0.99/cello packs that Hoiles and Drabek errors do. Not impossible, but I feel pretty certain they come from two separate runs.

I just sold my PSA 9 Drabek (pop1 - no 10s) for $49.99, a bad sign that these cards have steadily dropped in price over the last year. Good luck getting $40+ for a raw. Regardless, congrats on a nice junk purchase.

Hmm, that's a welcoming response to a new poster. Don't want to sell the box as it's a pleasant thing to open on a Sunday afternoon, just enjoy looking at the old photos and stats and finding quirky variations. Definitely keep assuming that every new person you meet is out to scam you though, good way to make new friends.

Thanks for the info! I'm just amazed that anything of value can be pulled from these boxes. Maybe I mis-stated that they were cello packs -- they are in clear cello packaging with gum but with "wings" on the packaging unlike 80's topps cellos. Is that what all '91 cellos are like?

Thanks for doing all the research about the variations, it makes a classic product seem new again to look for variations. Do you have any estimate on the print run of the major variations? Are they truly rare, or just rare compared to normal mass-produced era cards?

No print run but they are harder to find than most variations from 1981-1994 Topps baseball sets. The Whiten card is slowly starting to look like the scarcest of them though.

How many cards per pack and how many sections? Cellos were just one section containing 34 cards and looked like this:

Jumbo's were two had 100 cards and looked like this:

Rack packs had three sections and contained 45 cards.
