Andruw Jones was a shoo-in for the HOF at age 29. He had 342 HRs, 1023 RBIs, a war of 55.6, 9 straight Gold Gloves, and was arguably the best defensive CF of all time. And then he signed with the Dodgers, and batted .158 with 3 HRs and 14 RBIs in 75 games.

Donnie Baseball had an OPS+ of 144 with a WAR of 32.2 through age 28, including a batting title, an MVP award, and 5 straight Gold Gloves.

On the other end of the spectrum, Phil Niekro was just 31-27 for his career when he turned 30. He won 287 games after his 30th birthday (and had 2999 Ks).

Good info. Goes to show you can't just be great for 6-8 years. Nobody under 30 in the league is a "lock" to make it. To be a HOF you need great numbers until near the end of a long, successful career.

Or develop a killer knuckler in your 30s.

Not really sure what to take from the Hall of Fame statistics on Baseball Reference. Here's an example:

Justin Verlander

Black Ink 45, avg HOFer 40
Gray Ink 121, avg HOFer 185
Hall of Fame monitor 84, likely HOFer 100
Hall of Fame standards 28, avg HOFer 50

So what do I get from that? I don't know what the best one of those to use is, probably hof standards? Seems like he's really close to being in already. I know he's done some strange things that no one else has. Like only player in MLB history to win ROY, throw a no hitter, pitch in World Series and All Star game in first 2 seasons. Cabrera is killing it and demolishes Verlander in 3 of the 4 categories. Verlander has him beat in Black Ink. Braun has the next closest consistently great stats to Cabrera and he is nowhere near him in all 4 cats. Yet Braun has an MVP and Cabrera doesn't.

To put into perspective about how good Andruw Jones was, just look at the company he keeps. Position players who had a WAR over 55 through age 29:

Lock? No.
Do I think? Yes.

Joey Votto...probably the best pure hitter in the game for the next 8-9 years.

I am surprised there hasn't been any mention of Felix Hernandez.

I think the most obvious name is Cabrera. I also think Braun, Fielder, and Cano will get in but Wright and Ramirez won't. In terms of pitchers, I think Verlander and King Felix will get in. Back to Cano for a second and his over 30 WAR prior to age 30. While I think he'll get in, compare that to Lou Whitaker's WAR before age 30 (37.3). Whitaker finished with a WAR of 71.4 and didn't even sniff the HOF on the BBWAA ballot.

I think Felix Hernandez gets in but lack of wins could hurt unless Seattle turns it around or he moves on via FA to a better team.

Mauer is an interesting case. If he continues to play the majority of his games at catcher and wins a few more batting titles and ends his career with close to 2500 hits and a 0.330 average I think he gets in. That to me is too many ifs. And if he switches positions, he better get close to 3000 hits.

I think this is one of the things about being "older and wiser" than some of these boards. Not a slag in the slightest, but those of us who remember other eras of baseball vividly remember a ton of "locks" for the Hall of Fame and absolute stars...almost forgotten by the newer fans/collectors.

I'm not sure it's not more of a difference of interpretation of the question the OP asked. He asked who people thought would be a HOFer when it is all said and done, not whether any player was a lock. Certainly some players will fall off and not make it but The question was to make a prediction, nothing more.

(that said, I love all the history this thread is bringing up.)

Jered Weaver has to do it for another 7 or 8 years, but with the New HOF standards for pitchers, he'll get in.

And it'll be interesting to see if any of the guys who started their careers as Closers make it long enough to get into Cooperstown.

Papelbon, Kimbrel, Storen, Chapman and guys like that but it would take a 10+ year perennial All-Star career...

Wow no Yadi Molina mention? One of the best defensive catchers ever and he is having increasing numbers offensively year after year.
McCann really? wow

I personally don't think I can put guys like Harper and Trout on a list. HOF talent yes, but they have only played in the bigs a few months. Give me a few years of production.

I would say guys like Kemp, Braun, McCutchen, Cano are all projecting to end with HOF careers. Cutch may be a stretch, but he just keeps improving.
