HOFAutos question had me looking...I had always suspected Brady Anderson as the classic case of a steroid user. I looked into the home run hitters of 1996 and was shocked, and wondering who on this list (Top 50 of 1996) did NOT use steroids?

In regards to bonds, there is not a single published or assumed suggestion that Barry Bonds was using in 1996. Not a single shred of anything alludes to that early usage.

However, I will assume that usage was rampant in 1996.

No rumors or anything because who would even care about them, but off my own feelings, I'd suspect Geronimo Berroa and John Jaha. I also always assumed Ryan Klesko used.

These are the ONLY guys I would even consider NOT using anything...

3 Ken Griffey Jr. 49
16 Frank Thomas 40
21 Jim Thome 38
46 Fred McGriff 28

If it came out that those guys did steroids I would be pretty shocked. Everyone else would not surprise me at all.....

I would say Jay Buhner didn't use..

When he was playing, he was either swinging for the fences or striking out...

How can you be "sure" anyone did not use?

All that can be done is find and correct the ones who did.

This thread is akin to trying to figure out who is innocent before proven guilty??

I do not get it............

The fact is, you can't be sure anyone didn't use them. You can come up with all kinds of justifications for why a player may or may not use steroids but if you look at the players who have used steroids (from Donnie Sadler all the way to Barry Bonds), there is no pattern. Crappy players used them. Great players used them. Players with bad personalities used them. Players with great personalities used them. Old players on the decline used them. Young players on the upswing used them. Some players used them and that resulted in injuries. Some players used them with no effects. Some players got big after using them. Some didn't. Some were hitters. Some were pitchers.

I'd like to think that Bagwell never took the juice but I am probably wrong. I just think that if he had been on the roids he would have hit 500. He was a MUCH MUCH better hitter than many of the players that have reached 500 in the last decade or so. Also, if he was on the juice he should have been able to recover from his arthritic shoulder (and don't blame the juice for the shoulder cause his father has the same injury).

If you "know" your favorite player never used roids I KNOW you are living in a fantasy world.

At this point I don't even "know" that I've never used roids, let alone any specific player.

Craig[/quote]Craig, clearly getting through law school was a result solely of steroid use.

Well...that and Panchero's burritos.

Don't forget the Pokey Sticks from Gumby's. Lots of Pokey Sticks.

I miss Pokey Sticks at 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

I would even think that Thome is innocent before Griffey.
Thome has always been built like a lumberjack, and Thomas is just a beast.
Thome has a legitimate possibility of beating the HR record too, if he can continue to get the at bats, and play to mid 40s...That would be awesome.
