Take the 100 best players today, cut that list in half, cut it in half again, and out of those 25, pick the 10 best (good luck). Those are who will make it.

Jose Bautista has turned it up since last season, but will never make the HOF

Bautista is who i thought of first.

His career path is pretty much unprecedented.

I used to think it was like Cecil Fielder, but Cecil never batted .330

This is a bit of a stetch on comparisons, but I have always thought that Jose Bautista reminded me of Roger Maris. Both came out of the blue with home run totals.

jeff kent?

I'd be appalled if he didn't make it. Arguably the best hitting second baseman of all time.
Good thing you don't have a vote

What's your argument? Other than taking a shot at me? The home run leader for a position isn't good enough for the Hall of Fame?

It's not a shot at you, it's a shot at Kent.

His name does not belong with Morgan, Robinson, Carew, Fox, LaJoie.

If he's in Luis Gonzalez is in.

So wait...I just want to make sure I'm understanding this right. You're saying because Jeff Kent leads all second baseman in career home runs that he should be inducted into the HoF? Based on that alone?

I agree. One of the ways you make the Hall is being the best at your position and thats what he was.

How does leading one category at the position you play = being the best at that position? :?

I never thought there was a question about Jeff Kent making it in. Most of what I've read on the subject assumes that he'll be in the HOF, since most writers tend to to rate him as one of the top 2B alltime. He's no Joe Morgan, but who is? Nelson Fox didn't get in until 1997, so it's not like he was the HOF 2B that all others are rated against. There's no reason Joe Gordon and Tony Lazzeri are in the HOF and Jeff Kent wouldn't be.

He doesn't even have the most RBI even though he has the most HR :?: :|

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying one way or another if Jeff Kent should or shouldn't get into the HoF. I just am trying to understand if someone is trying to say that because a player leads one career offensive category for their position that automatically means they should get into the HoF. Or it making them the best player at that position. I don't see that logic at all.

You... you just quoted RBI as a HOF stat!? RBI is one of the most meaningless stats in baseball. Kent spent his prime hitting BEHIND BARRY BONDS.

I said "arguably the best hitting." There's an argument to be had there.

As far as overall here's some WAR numbers:

Lajoie 104.2
Morgan 103.5
Carew 79.1
Alomar 63.5
Robinson 63.2
Kent 59.4
Fox 44.4

Kent:
Hall of Fame Monitor Batting - 122 (111), Likely HOFer ? 100
Hall of Fame Standards Batting - 51 (76), Average HOFer ? 50

Fewer career errors than almost every other HOF 2B. He's going to make it for his offensive work; on their own his numbers don't scream HOF but put them against the other 2B in the Hall and he's in.

I really don't care on way or the other, but I just find it odd that I've never seen or read anything questioning Kent being one of the best 2B until now.
