I voted Pirates, but my real vote is too early to decide. What if Alderson is a bust, or what if Sanchez steps it up?

Alderson had looked great at every stop. Freddy is a fine infielder but he seems like his bat is not the same as it was a few years ago..

Great trade for both sides. Giants needed another bat and a guy who will show up and get hits every day. Pirates need young pitching. Alderson is a good prospect, but keep in mind, he's not exactly the only young pitcher SF has.

I think it's a very close deal when all is said and done, but I give the lead to the Pirates.

The Pirates. Sanchez know has to hit in a pitcher's park.

My exact thought (with the exception of "know" :P ).

The Giants need a big bat to drive in these on-base guys.

I am surprised by the poll. I thought it was the Pirates too, but not by this much.

What makes Freddy valuable? He has a career .300 average, but he has only hit above .300 twice (once only at .304) and he has below average power. His career OPS+ (my favorite single stat to measure a player's hitting ability) is 98. According to this, he is a below average hitter. His fielding is average, but not exceptional in any way. According to this, the Giants gave up a top 30 prospect for an average infielder.

He will do better in SF. He's not a HR hitter and with the expansive outfield he should be a doubles/triples machine.

I think it was a good trade for both. The Giants got a solid bat that they needed and they gave up a pitcher, a position that the Giants are loaded at.

Well it's an either or poll. If you had a poll of who was better, LeBron or Kobe, one may win by a wide margin, but that doesn't reflect how much better people think the winner is, just how many people think the winner is better. I think the Giants did alright, just that the Pirates did better.

Pirates easily ... some ppl try to defend it by saying sanchez helps the giants, prospects can bust, etc... but this ignores the fact that aldersons value as a trade chip is so much higher ... he could have been included in a deal as a centerpiece for a great hitter, not just an avg one with little power

This board is also known for loving prospects, so the vote is following suit.

Easily Giants win! Sanchez is well worth a potential bust!

Of the 5 seasons that Sanchez has played as a full-time player in the majors, 3 of them have been above average in terms of hitting (peaking at an OPS+ of 119). That is pretty decent for a solid defensive 2B.

Come on now..That is the definition of bending stats to support your argument. Freddy had 1 exceptional year when he won the batting title and had the 119 OPS+, but the other two years you speak of are this year (109) which is not over yet and 103 which is basically average. He is solid, and will help the Giants, but he is definitely not worth 4-5 years of a cost controlled Tim Alderson.
