As in any sport, the draft is a great way to set up your teams future. Some teams are great at this, others, not so much. So who is the worst since 1990???

I am going to do this based on the teams first round picks since 1990.

Feel free to state the team, and the picks, and why you think they are the worst.

I am going with the Cubs. Here are their 1st round picks since 1990.

Lance Dickson
Doug Glanville
Derek Wallace
Brooks Kieschnick
Jayson Peterson
Kerry Wood
Todd Noel
JOn Garland
Corey Patterson
Ben Christensen
Luis MOntanez
Mark Prior
Bobby Brownlie
Ryan Harvey
Mark Pawelek
Tyler COlvin
Josh Vitters (still have some hope with this pick)

i concur with the cubs pick (and i am a huge cub fan), but i disagree with the pirate's pick. the pirates just trade off all of there better picks, which is unfortunate.

You can't blame the Cubs for Prior. Any team would have taken him in the same slot. The Giants have not drafted an All Star position player in 17 years. We have drafted some good pitchers though. (Cain, Lincecum, Nathan, Lariano, Bumgarger, Alderson)

Easily the Padres. With them being the AA team for Mobile for 10 years, I seen some terrible baseball. Sure, we have Jake Peavy and Jason Bay mixed in with some fringe stars like Matt Clement and Gary Matthews Jr. The D-Backs have sent more MLB ready talent in a span of 3 years then the Padres sent in 10. Bold are the Mobile years

2007 Nick Schmidt
2006 Matt Antonelli
2005 Cesar Carrillo
2004 Matt Bush
2003 Tim Stauffer
2002 Khalil Greene
2001 Jake Gautreau
2000 Mark Phillips
1999 Vince Faison
1998 Sean Burroughs
1997 Kevin Nicholson

1996 Matt Halloran
1995 Ben Davis
1994 Dustin Hermanson
1993 Derrek Lee
1992 Todd Helton ( Did not Sign )
1991 Joey Hamilton
1990 Robbie Beckett

I can't agree. Maybe not the worst, but not even close to being anything special. Looks like 3 for 18 so far with the young guys far too early to tell.

2008 Pedro Alvarez
2007 Daniel Moskos
2006 Brad Lincoln
2005 Andrew McCutchen
2004 Neil Walker
2003 Paul Maholm
2002 Bryan Bullington
2001 John VanBenschoten
2000 Sean Burnett
1999 Bobby Bradley
1998 Clinton Johnston
1997 J.J. Davis
1996 Kris Benson
1995 Chad Hermansen
1994 Mark Farris
1993 Charles Peterson
1992 Jason Kendall
1991 Jonathan Farrell
1990 Kurt Miller

I also submit that The Brewers have had the biggest turn around over that time. The best guy they drafted before Ben Sheets was Geoff Jenkins. Now the roster's stars are all guys drafted after about 2001.

I guess the Rays would fall into that category as well.

While the Cubs and Pirates may have the worst record capitalizing on first-rounders, they have had their share of good players come up. More than any other sport, baseball stars come from anywhere, at any evaluation in terms of draft ranking. While there's only one Mike Piazza, it's not uncommon for 5-10th rounders become all-stars or more. That's why there are so many rounds, and used to be 60+.

FWIW, the Diamondbacks and Rays have been drafting since 1996, and they haven't had a first-rounder yet who's played as many as 500 games as a hitter or 100 games as a pitcher, though there were those 2 missing years at the start. Although it's likely that their picks from the early-mid 2000s (Cust, Jackson, Quentin, Drew, Uptonx2, Young) should get there and well beyond.

Actually, the Yankees are terrible also. Except for Jeter, Carl Everett, and Eric Milton, none of their first rounders since 1990 has had a significant impact, and the majority have never even reached the majors. I guess that's why they focus on free agents.

I think it's been proven that so far of the teams posted, it's clearly the Chicago White Sox.

Every other team mentioned at least has an all-star on their list.
