was Chicago now Glendale AZ
White Sox drafts have been lousy after the nice string they put together (Big Hurt, Robin V, Black Jack McDowell, Alex Fernandez)

To the post a few above -- Chris Young not drafted by AZ (he was acquired from Chi Sox)

Hopefully Beckham starts a new straing of 4 years in row with good drafts for Sox

I actually coached against Kris Honel
He was awesome and cannot blame Sox for that pick

The sad part for the Cubs is even when everything looks great for them (ala Prior falling to them) it still doesn't work out. The curse goes beyond not winning the World Series. Prior was (at the time) the best prospect in years, with his unreal mechanics, he would never get injured. Well, we know how that panned out. ::facepalm::

I can only hope that recent picks like Vitters, Cashner & Jericho Jones can stop the trend.

BTW, was there ever a player with a bigger hole in their swing than Brooks Kieschnick? Yes, I'm a die hard Cub fan!!! ;)

While the Cubs and Pirates may have the worst record capitalizing on first-rounders, they have had their share of good players come up. More than any other sport, baseball stars come from anywhere, at any evaluation in terms of draft ranking. While there's only one Mike Piazza, it's not uncommon for 5-10th rounders become all-stars or more. That's why there are so many rounds, and used to be 60+.

FWIW, the Diamondbacks and Rays have been drafting since 1996, and they haven't had a first-rounder yet who's played as many as 500 games as a hitter or 100 games as a pitcher, though there were those 2 missing years at the start. Although it's likely that their picks from the early-mid 2000s (Cust, Jackson, Quentin, Drew, Uptonx2, Young) should get there and well beyond.

Actually, the Yankees are terrible also. Except for Jeter, Carl Everett, and Eric Milton, none of their first rounders since 1990 has had a significant impact, and the majority have never even reached the majors. I guess that's why they focus on free agents.

Just so everyone is aware...here are the MLB briefs for the Chicago White Sox players that Matt listed.

Alex Fernandez - serviceable MLB career of 10 seasons
Scott Ruffcorn - 70 career MLB innings in 5 seasons
Eddie Pearson - never reached the Majors
Scott Christman - never reached the Majors
Mark Johnson - less than 1000 ABs in a part-time 8-year career
Jeff Liefer - career .230 hitter in 7 part-time seasons
Bobby Seay - now an ugly mop-up pitcher with Detroit, never more than 60 IP in a season
Jason Dellaero - proud owner of a .091 AVG in his single MLB taste in '99.
Robert Wells - Kip is the 'stellar' (IE: a polished turd) player of this "Bad News Bears" draft team.
Jason Stumm - A brutal "miss" in the '99 Draft, never reached the Majors.
Matt Ginter - One of many huge misses in the 2000 First Round, never reached the Majors.
Joe Borchard - Amazing bust and even more amazing is that he is still kicking in the minors with his career .205 MLB AVG.
Kris Honel - Amazing potential, and a fragile arm, never saw the Majors.
Royce Ring - 65 career MLB IP.
Brian Anderson - holding the outfield warm for the next live body, Anderson should be out of the MLB in a year.
Josh Fields - versatile bench player who can't hit MLB pitchers.
Lance Broadway- Middle reliever potential, with some MLB experience
Gordon Beckham - Fresh off of a promotion to Chicago, if Beckham hits .300 with over 10 homeruns, he'll produce more than virtually every White Sox 1st rounder since 1990.

The Orioles have been blowing chunks over the years also. Other than Markakis this list isn't stellar. If it wouldn't be for Mussina in 90 this would be pretty bad.

Didn't Matt Ginter pitch for the Indians last year?I could be wrong,i will check later.

Alex Fernandez was better than serviceable. He was an unqualified success as a first rounder in my opinion. The Braves and Dodgers were the best drafting teams until very recently. The new regime in Atlanta appears to be taking a major leap backward. I think the Brewers are becoming the club who when they make a pick, you assume they picked the right guy. They are the best going today

Disagree with the Chisox and go with the Cubbies and Orioless . If you look beyond round 1 the Chisox got James Baldwin 4th and Joe Crede 5th. Both All-Stars and the Cubs and Orioless have nothing past round 1.

I was going to mention my lowly Royals, but they did draft Johnny Damon and Zack is looking like an All-Star Lock. Beltran was also drafted round #2 and their drafts over the last 3 years are solid in theory.
