Let us not forget that Andruw Jones is two years younger than Alex Rodriguez. He can still turn it around!

Some day these two will be easy hall of famers

Some day these two will sign for 500 thousand a year, or not be able to find a job because they're broken down old men.

The 84 Mattingly had me hooked. The real stuff for me started with the 90 leaf and 90 bowman/score/ud/fleer donruss. Made a killing on Lance Berkman from 97 BC thats when I really honed in on the skills. Fun times. I loved asking dealers for guys they never heard of and getting them for next to nothing. That did not last long.

First "prospecting venture" was Cal Ripken, Jr., circa 1982, Baltimore Orioles.

Hits and misses henceforth:

1983 Gwynn - hit, Strawberry - hit (cannot remember losses)

1984 - Alvin Davis - Miss, Jim Pressley - miss, Ron Kittle - flip, Joe Carer - hit (there's Celveland again).

1985 - Sid Bream - miss. Mark McGwire - huge hit. Dale Sveum (sp) - Miss.

1986 - Andres Gallaragga huge hit, Barry Bonds huge hit, Bonilla Miss, Pasqua - painful miss, etc.

1987 - biggest hoard to date and huge loss, Glenn Braggs. Second biggest hoard to date, and huge gain, Eric The Red.

The rest is hostory. I was born in 1971.

Since 1995 for me.

Bowman and Bowman's Best were spectacular products, especially the BBest Blue Refractors.

And Topps hasn't put out a BBest product worth buying since, with the possible exception of 2003's offering.

Blue refractors were out ONLY in 1994 and that's because the prospect portion of the set was blue. There were no "Blue" refractors in Bowman's Best post-1994.

There is a big difference between prospecting and speculating.

What you describe above is speculating and what I mean by that is buying cards of established major leaguers, such as every player you listed; whereas prospecting is buying cards of players who would qualify for their respective teams Baseball America top 30 prospect list at the time that their first cards come out.

Yes there were. 1995 had blue backgrounds for prospects, red for vets.

This is still wrapped today - I thought no one could be a Yankee miss - then Maas - with my all-time favorite Ruben Rivera - same box as my Ron Jones Stash - and in between Matt Wiiliams and Van Poppel stashes

None of these guys were established major leaguers in the year listed. In the 80s, few guys would have been on the prospect list when their cards came out because there was no such thing as cards for minor leaguers. A guy like Strawberry or Gooden would have had cards the year they were drafted -- they didn't have cards until they made the majors (83 TT, 84 TT and FU, respectively). The above poster bought the cards as early as he could have -- with the exception of Alvin DAvis, his RCs weren't until 1985, and Kittle's RCs were 83, not 84.
